I don't think Verbascum sp. is correct. I looked up several species that are supposed to occur around here. The flower arrangement does not appear to be right for that genus. In this mystery plant, the flowers occur along the length of the stem; whereas Verbascum should have a flower spike. The flowers are also slightly smaller in diameter than a dime. The tiny leaves are not fuzzy. Here's another photo showing the growth form of the plant in question.

A word of caution. Read ingredients. Many companies sell "wildflower" seeds that include many alien species like queen anne's lace and ox-eye daisies. Many companies also offer "native wildflowers" that are native to the US, but probably not any specific region. I've seen "native wildflower mixes" here in PA that include california poppies and other things that aren't native anywhere within hundreds of miles. Many places sell good quality seeds, but I suggest doing some homework and and creating your own mix. It's all a matter of your preferences and what you are trying to achieve, but I'm a bit skeptical of vendor provided information, which is often manipulated a bit to improve sales. Ziggy

That is unfortunate. Have had that happen to me and can't help wondering if it was ignorance or is it was intentional. Fortunately there are some good native plant suppliers out there. Two that I have ordered from are Prairie Moon Nursery and Ion Exchange. Prairie Moon sells seeds for Phlox divaricata and Ion Exchange has plugs (small plants in trays). You might also see if you can find a native plant society in your area that has a native plant sale in the spring. Once you find a good supplier you will probably end up buying more from them, which is how it should work. Good luck.

Watch the wildflower mixes many are just european flower seeds. There are some good mixes out there but if you like certain plants see if you can find some at the end of the season sales that you find at nurseries. Mix in a quart or two of sand and spread. Many of the perenials and biannuals will come up this fall and may flower next year. The sand helps keep the plants from clustering. There will be some plant that come up from a cluster because that is the way their seed is. Think of beets one seed actually has five or more seeds clumped to gether. Be certain to mix some annuals in the mix depending where you will be in SC you may have time for them to flower or they may wait until next spring to germinate. As you find new native plants that you wish to add spread the seed of those in the spots that have nothing growing.
