Anise - Florida vs Japanese questions

The site search is not working!!! Driving me nutty!

I think that I have a tag mix up with a recent purchase. I purchased Illicium parviflorum - is that not Florida Anise? I read ONE tag in the store. ANOTHER tag on the plants read "Illicium parviflorum - Japanese Anise - light green foliage with yellow-green flowers"

Okay. Isn't Japanese anise Illicium anisatum? This plant has dark green leaves.

There was a mild mix up at the register about this plant, and they also carried Illicium floridanum. I intended to take back the Japanese Anise and get the floridanum.

I have questions -

Does the dark green leaves indicate this plant would be Japanese anise anisatum and not the native parviflorum?

What is the difference between parviflorum and floridanum? If I look it up on the NPIN I get the same entries and plant.

Will the floridanum - which has yellow leaves, look too similar to Calycanthus floridus - Carolina allspice, which is already planted and the anise is meant to go next to. I preferred the dark leaf as I'm not wild about that particular shade of yellow leaf, but Japanese anise is not what I want. I may need to look for an alternative for this spot if the allspice and anise look too alike.

I have seen this as well: Illicium parviflorum - Japanese Anise; I wonder (since we are in a similar area) if those labels are coming from the same nursery? I finally decided that they got the scientific name but the common name wrong.

What is the difference between parviflorum and floridanum?

Floridanum has a red flower and prefers shade. Parviflorum has a white flower and can handle some sun. Those are the major differences that I know of.

Thank you, that is the conclusion that I had tentatively reached, the common name being wrong. I'm going to plant them. The Illicium parviflorum was grown at McCorkle Nurseries in Dearing, GA.

Tomorrow the plan is to go to the GNC Native Plant Sales and hopefully they will have the floridanum which I wanted elsewhere instead of going back to the first nursery. I'm hoping GPC has a lot of things I am looking for - I'd rather buy as much as I can from them and give them my money.

some other things i've learned that folks haven't brought up, all of which i believe to be true: - don't trim back 'old wood' that's alive. to tell if the wood is alive on any perrennial plant, you can usually scratch the surface. if it's green/white and firm to the touch, the wood is still alive. - most hydrangeas that aren't 'repeat bloom' require 'old wood' from the year before to produce blooms. for this reason, you shouldn't necessarily trim down to the ground every year. i wouldn't trim to the ground either way. - good way to tell if you have 'repeat bloom' is to look for blooms on new growth. i have rarely ever seen a 'classic' hydrangea put out a bloom on new shoots unless it was a 'repeat bloom'. there are a lot of crazy new varieties out in the last 4-5 years (especially those from McCorkle Nurseries) - soil pH defines the color of the bloom, with acidic being pinker, and basic being bluer. you can change the pH of the soil using additives (powders) in and around the soil. this can take several years. - big-leaf (big ball flower) hydrangeas you find all over nearby stores CAN handle sun, but you're probably going to see the leaves wilt when it gets really hot (direct sun/high heat) in the 1st and 2nd year of growth, and if not properly tended to, they're gonna croak or look like crap. i found watering them with cool hose water when the mid-day sun isn't directly hitting them (in the evening, etc.) seems to help. once well established, after a couple of years, they CAN handle sun. it helps to work them into it, though. we got lucky with many of ours, the sun takes slightly different east->west paths every year, so ours are getting various amounts of direct, full sun every year. last year was really bad (2nd year and 3rd year, respectively), and a couple of them i was certain would die. we made out fairly well, though. again, this is only based on personal experience and some opinion. YMMV regardless of what a label on a plant says, a lot of times, plants WILL grow and thrive in environments OTHER than what the tag tells you. the key is, you gotta be hardheaded enough to ignore the tag =)

Kentucky-It's just that friendly---that is our state motto. I don't know much about the rest of the country but in my little corner of the world 99% of the people are friendly and polite. The company I used to work for was bought by a bigger company from Lancaster PA, so we had a lot of visitors from up north and I found that they were all very nice people, but on one trip down they told us as they were driving through a very small town to get to our small town thwt people were out in the yard mowing or gardening or just relaxing and as they drove by they would wave, they all wanted to know why all these people were waving at them? One girl even asked me what they wanted. I had to laugh, they just wanted to be friendly and say howdy. Very friendly part of the world, even complete strangers. Store clerks and waitresses all ask how are you doing today, and they chit chat about the weather and just life. I'm very lucky.

Laughing, because as an internet writer, I can attest that what Carol said is true. It starts out as an article that uses an authoritative source, such as UF/IFAS, then the facts just get reused over and over again in other articles. I can't tell you how many articles I've written with the same facts in them, just put into different context. It's like the old adage about there only being 7 stories in the world. There is only one way to do a lot of stuff in horticulture, and we writers try to change it up a little to get paid, like "How to Grow Hibiscus In Containers," or "How to Grow Hibiscus in Clay Soil," etc., etc., but no matter what we write, some facts about growing hibiscus never change, so all the articles start sounding alike. There is a plagiarism detector that looks for any four words in the exact same order in other articles online. It's almost impossible not to get at least one or two hits. I've become an expert at what I call "thesaurusing" articles so they don't get matches. Sometimes, people actually will pay writers to just rewrite an existing article so it passes the plagiarism checkers. In copyright circles, this is known as "repurposing" and you can get sued for it, but the thing is, if you're good enough so plagiarism checkers don't flag it, you'll never get caught.

I have 26 Japanese Maples, most purchased as very tiny first or second year plants, and I do no winter protection on them and haven't lost a one in nine years. Get them well established with proper watering this fall, mulch them well, and leave them alone. As far as the Crape Myrtles, in my own experience it depends on how the winter winds move throughout your yard. I will give you a hint on managing them even though it makes me look like an idiot- When I first moved here in '07 I had no idea how to manage many of this zones plants. Spring was an extremely amazing time- I had come from South Florida, so spring was a novelty to me. Every morning I would rush out to look at my new plantings to see buds or leaves. I got busy doing my spring chores- pruning and so on. My first year with Crape Myrtles here (we had them in SoFla as well) they never budded. I always thought the winter had gotten them and pruned them back knowing that the roots had probably survived and they had. They always came back, but seemed to die back every winter. I saw nice big mature Crape Myrtles in my neighborhood, though, and couldn't figure out where I went wrong. Then I had a family emergency year where I had next to no time to garden. I would go out, check the Crape Myrtles for growth and think "I really need to cut those back" but I could never find the time. Finally in about May they budded out! All up and down the stems, too- not just from root growth. That's my very long winded way of saying that they can be VERY late to leaf out. All those years I had cut them back in my early spring frenzy I had been cutting off viable stems. DUH me. I do no winter protection here except for a very few mophead hydrangeas. I try to select good plants for my zone, grow them well, and aside from that they are on their own. I think your plants will be fine.

Illicium parviflorum will usually have dark green foliage, if grown in full shade. If grown in partial to full sun exposure the foliage will be yellow-green to yellow. Under deciduous trees, the winter sunlight will turn the foliage yellow-green.
The yellow-green flowers are tiny, Â½-Â¾" dia.(1-2cm), less than half the size of Illicium floridanum (2" or 5 cm).

There is a white-flowering form of Illicium floridanum, sometimes listed as a cultivar, 'Alba', but more correctly as, forma alba, since it does occur in wild populations.
Curious thing about the forma alba, when the seed pods explode, the seed is usually propelled further from the mother plant than occurs on the maroon/red-flowerd ones?

When you go to George's plant sale at the GPC Native Plant Botanical Garden, look for some rare, unusual & endangered species plants, that you can't usually find anywhere else. If you are interested in that sort of thing!

razorback33 - thanks for the tip on the leaf color. These are for a wildlife hedgerow and intended to provide some of the evergreen factor, the flowers aren't important (except to invite bees I hope). Still, I prefer the darker green so will move them further down my hedgerow into more shade than I have them in.

I have been trying not to buy a lot so I can purchase more at the GPC and local native sales - yes, I am very interested in endangered plants, hope my truck is big enough. Otherwise I'll be madly ordering online to meet spring deadlines.

Hey, thanks for the clarification you guys gave me. I was able to pick up two floridanum at the GPC sale, and planted a row of the floridanum alternating with two parviflorum as part of my mixed hedgerow. It provides some coverage for the birds, which is a goal (and privacy from a neighbor), and I am really liking the look a lot. I would not have done it that way without asking here first, and would not have liked the results as much.

AND my beau likes it. He was horrified when I cut down all the Chinese privet (a of of it) and opened up the view to the neighbors. Their hot tub no less. Poor beau, feel sorry for this man putting up with me. He likes the Anise better than privet.

The GPC sale was great. I packed an suv with shrubs, all of them ones I was specifically looking for. Life is good.

Glad to hear you got what you wanted. Illicium is my temperature indicator plant - if the temps drop below 32, it will droop. Once they come back above 32, the plant returns to normal. Since our temps are predicated to fall below 32 in the next couple of days, I just want to point this out.
