The true leaves in the photo do not look similar to the leaves of any bean I've grown. I don't know what it is....but I doubt it is a garden variety bean.

Welcome to Arizona gardening. Its not required but recommended that your tomatoes either get afternoon shade or be protected from the afternoon sun with 50% shade cloth. I'm not sure how many bean plants you will need. I have not been as successful with them as some other members have been. I started a thread about tomatoes in the tomato forum that may be of help to you. The link is below. Peppers grow well here but do better with afternoon shade. From time to time a farmer will stop by and say they grow in Arizona without shade or shade cloth. Farming is different than vegetable gardening though. I drive by some farms on occasion that are not far from my home. Each time I do the temps drop as much as 5-10 degrees, sometimes more at night. A field full of peppers or tomatoes is evaporating massive amounts of water over a large area which drops the temperature and increases relative humidity. In my garden I can have 8 percent relative humidity at 110 degrees with a 15 mile an hour wind speed. At the same time in the farmers field its 99 degrees with 50 percent humidity with a 15 mile an hour wind. That dryer wind in the home garden in full afternoon sun can suck the life out of a plant. My main crops are squash, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and a few melons during the summer. If you click on the photo it will take you to my photobucket page where you can see more pictures. I grew Super Sugar Snap last year and spaced them about 4 inches apart. I'm not quite picturing your pyramid trellis... My trellis was a series of 5 foot wooden stakes with nails in it, and I tied a grid of jute twine to the nails. Whatever kind of trellis you use, put it in the ground first and then plant your peas, so that you don't disturb the plants or their roots after they start growing.

Pretty much the same situation here, Denninmi. Tilled the gardens in May, and had a dry window to get everything in... then suddenly found myself on 60-70 hour weeks, with little time to plant. Got my home plots completely planted, some beans & soybeans in my rural plot, and started more beans indoors during the rains; but still only about 50% done. Hoping that the rain holds off, and that I can get a free Saturday this month!!! Fortunately, some of the beans I was most interested in are in my home plot, such as Dean's "Bosnian Yellow Pole" and "Succotash". Got quite a few soybeans in before the rain, and have had really great germination (even from 5-year-old seed!) so hoping it will finally be a good year for my preservation efforts. The biggest toll so far has been on my yardlong beans, which are also behind in my preservation efforts, after two years of failures. I don't normally start them until the weather looks good 7-10 days downline, so I can get them in the ground shortly after germination. They don't do well if left in the greenhouse too long. Had one chance on Memorial Day, but couldn't get them started early enough to make it; probably just as well, given how cool it has been since. I'll be starting them tomorrow.
