The leaf shape and wooliness with five-petalled flowers make me suspect some species of Malus.

I believe this is a serviceberry (Amelanchier). I think serviceberry rather than Malus because the flowers are in racemes (Malus flowers are mostly in simple umbels or clusters.) Identifying individual species of Amelanchier can be very tricky, but, given those woolly leaves, possibilities include Amelanchier spicata (if it's a colonial shrub 1-4 feet tall) or A. canadensis or A. arborea (if it's a large shrub or tree)

lol, identifying almost ANY species is VERY tricky! I don't like plant IDing. Even if you have a field guide (which I do), I can almost never ID plants I see. Some plants are the same species but can look COMPLETELY different from place to place, from time to time, from individual to individual. And yet you can only tell some species apart because of tiny miniscule details. It's ridiculous.
But anyway, It's definately not spicata, as it was taller than that. It doesn't look like canadensis either, because (going from this picture- http://www.floridata.com/wallpaper/jpg/Amelanchier_canadensis_flwr800.jpg ) the petals look too long, and the anthers/stigma don't look like that either.
Same story with arborea.
