Some Audubon plant sales as sources

On the NJ Forum somebody mentioned CMBO as a source for a particular native plant. I had no idea what CMBO (Cape May Bird Observatory) stood for, and in the course of finding out, I saw that other Audubon centers also had plant sales. One of these is close enough to where I live that IÂm probably going to take advantage of it. Sometimes itÂs hard to find the native plants I want, especially from a local source, and the catalogue I just received from them has both Cephalanthus occidentalis (buttonbush) and Cornus racemosa (gray dogwood) as well as many other plants I want.

It may pay to check out if an Audubon center near you has a similar type of sale, although many don't.

Hey Lori,
You might want to look at the Delaware Riverkeeper Networks native plant sale. It is in Stocton on Rt 29.
Or a great mail order Natives nursery in Clark, New Jersey.

Thanks Frank. It looks like Stockton is about an hour away from me which is far, but not outrageously so, so I'll think about it. While poking around based on your posting, I saw on the NJ Native Plant Society page that there's also a sale that's fairly close to where my SIL lives which is great because I thought an Audubon center near her might have a sale she could go to and found that they didn't.

Thanks also for the link to Eastern Plant Specialties. I don't know if you want another mail order source, but if so this one is located in Frenchtown, NJ and is careful about issues of conservation etc. They don't have too large a selection of woody plants, but have a nice selection of perennials. I have ordered from them, and was happy with the plants.

Our Garden Club is planning a fall plant sale. We have heard other people talk about plant sales and what a joke they were. So we want to have a really nice one. And we know that pricing is a big issue. We don't plan on pricing high.I was wondering if anyone has some good ideas that they can share. Paige, just last night I was reading through my mail and saw an ad in a publication for the North Central Conservation District's annual plant sale. Phone # is 860-875-3881, or www.conservect.org/northcentral Orders due by April 3rd. Pick-up April 18th, 19th (doesn't say where. I remember one in, I think, Hamden last year - not sure if this is the same group). From ad: "All proceeds to support conservation programs. Ooooh, I love this post. I recently moved to Colorado (Littleton) in late August from my home state of Michigan and was wondering where all the good nurseries were! There a few small ones by me. As for seeds, I like to order from Jung's, Baker Seeds, and Burpee (their catalogs, like most seed catalogs, have much more variety than what is sold in stores). I will also order from an odd catalog or two I get, but the ones I named are where I order the most. For live plants, I like High Country Gardens and David Austin. Four years ago I ordered one of Jung's perennial gardens for sun. They came in 3 inch pots and I wasn't sure they would make it through the Michigan winter. Three summers in, I had the most lush, beautiful perennial garden I could hope for. I will definitely take the gamble on Jung's perennial garden again once I find a permanent home in CO. At least I am in same zone here as I was in MI so hopefully I will have the same success!

NJ Audubon plant sale with pick up on June 6 or 7 in Bernardsville

I won't be taking advantage of it but the Audubon center in Bernardsville NJ is having their native plant sale this year much to my surprise. This year you need to order online and pick up the plants at the specified day/time on the weekend of June 6. They have some plants not as easy to find elsewhere and in the past I've been satisfied with the prices. These are mostly plants geared to supporting wildlife including pollinators and plants which won't harm wild areas by spreading there and crowding out native species.
