Has anyone been to Winter Greenhouse?

Hello to all,

Just wondering if any of you have been to Winter Greenhouse in Winter Wisconsin? I am looking at going this weekend and I have never bought a hosta in the retail market before. So with all the cr*p out there today with hostas and me being an idiot hosta person(newbie), I was wondering if they are good or not? There are not listed in Dave's Garden so I cannot look them up there. Any help would be great. Thank you, Stacy in Wisconsin

Yes, I go there every year while musky fishing in Hayward. They have a magnificent display garden of a wide variety of plants.

They also have many mature hostas, including the best Great Expectations I've ever seen. I posted a picture on the forum, and you could probably pull it up by searching for my name and Great Expectations.

The hostas they sell, however, are nothing special. Mostly one-eyed and not a great variety. A little like Savory's in Edina in that respect. Great display garden, but not your best choice for buying something.

I agreee with everything Esox48 said. The display gardens are magnificent, true. I became frustrated, however, because I found a big SHINY black hosta in the display bed which was unmarked. I asked EVERYONE there if they knew what variety it was and no one knew. Josh on our forum thought it might be Potomac Pride but after looking at mine, this hosta was not as tall and the leaves aren't that big.

If you are nearby, it is definitely worth a visit. Just don't expect to come home laden with unique hostas. IMO

Could you tell us who the manufacturer was and what the tube gauge was of the bows? Were there any cross ties? It's unfortunate that many places simply sell you a greenhouse without any information on how much live load it can support. (snow is considered a live load) Some things I have found from researching greenhouses in snow/ice areas for a (30x48) 1) Use Gothic Style greenhouse, snow tends to fall off easier 2) Bows should be AT LEAST 14 gauge 1.90" tubing, 13 gauge better 3) Frames should have cross ties with trusses. Note that some greenhouses, like the FarmTek Gothic style Cold Frames of this size simply have a 10 foot cross tie near the peak which is inadequate. Cross ties should be at least 15 gauge 1.315" O.D. tubing or even 1.66" tubing. 4) It would also be preferable to have 15 gauge 1.315" O.D. purlins instead of the more common use of 17 gauge which is easy to bend. 5) If your greenhouse is heated and you use double layer inflated poly, you should turn the inflater off when there is an accumlation on your GH, especially ice. Deflating will allow the outer layer to come into contact with the inner warmer layer and help melt/slide the snow/ice off. Reflate after that has happened.

Hmmm, well, the photos of your tunnel are very flattering then. :-) It looks really nice inside. 6 t-posts should secure it... I had a 12 x 12 horse shed, roof and all, blow away and roll across my arena & flatten a fence one windy day, so I am spooked about the wind. :-) If you have time, I'd really appreciate a reality check on my idea about the garden, chickens, life, and everything... The garden is about 100 x 100, and there are a few dwarf fruit trees & an asparagus patch. It has an 8' fence. It's WAY too big for me to manage, it used to feed 3 households in the 'old' days. It always ends up a weedy mess, and I always try to grow more stuff that I can manage. So I was thinking of parking my henhouse in the garden. Then I could use the greenhouse frame for Spring as a crop tunnel, and in summer keep chicken wire over it to protect my crops. I can let the chickens range around it to eat bugs and forage on cover crops, then move the frame the next season to a different (fertilized) spot. Do you think that would work well? I thought about trying to use the tunnel over winters to give the chickens a well-protected run, as well. Maybe I am trying to do too much, but it would be so nice if it worked. And I'd really love having some plucky company in the garden! It sounds like one challenge would be finding a cover that would hold up from ~Dec. 1 to June 1. Anyway, I am really interested to know if you think that might work out... Cheers, Michelle

We will be having radiant in-floor heat throughout the house, so I would just run it out in the greenhouse too. I will also probably do some sort of air circulation system. Be sure to insulate the heck out of the slab it sits on! I would imagine that the extra humidity from it will be welcome in the main house in the winter, but problematic in the summer. I presume you will have a set of weather-tight doors (perhaps a double set, forming an airlock) between main house and this space, so that you can prevent warmth or coolth from travelling between the two when you don't want it to? --Steve

We had a blast!!! It was just LOVELY! It was very chilly outside (around 35F) pretty much all day, but at least the rain held off until the evening/next day. I heard that there is snow/ice there now, so I'm glad we went last weekend :) When I get some time I'll download some pix of the trip. I'm getting ready for some handbell performances and have NO time to spare at the moment--arrrgh!! I'm looking forward to December 26th!

Others can add a long list of hosta seldom mentioned here amongst obsessive compulsive collectors who have every single new one except the ones they haven't heard about.
Many will argue but Paul's Glory is old and as nice as any hosta you can find anywhere.

How far are you from Marshfield? Foxfire Gardens is amazing and they have a good selection of hosta.
