5 petal yellow wildflower ID, please

Along a small clear stream that runs into Alligator Lake in Columbia Co., I found this bushy green plant with these small 5 petal yellow flowers and green "fruit" in the center. Looking for an id, please. The temperature is somewhat moderated by the shallow but warm lake water very nearby. there is a nice little stand of Fumaria officinalis blooming nearby. any help in the id of this flower would be appreciated. Thank you. rd

Looks like a Small-flowered Crowfoot, Ranunculus abortivus to me.

I agree with the above, but would add that it is one of the nicest looking specimens I've seen.

I just stopped back to have a look at the plants again. I did take a couple of quick phogtos but was going to say that the plant itself looked like tall blades of grass. So Yellow Star Grass may be a good id.

It's true that you can't make an ID from just the flower, however there aren't that many yellow composites blooming this early in the year around here. I'll bet it's one of the Groundsels (Packera spp, they just changed the name recently so it's listed as Senecio in older books.) Scroll down for some pics very like yours. We call it Swamp Sunflower out here. Grows in the ditches and wild places. Continues to grow from the roots as well as drop seeds. Hardy. Perennial. Comes back faithfully. Can be cut back so that it stays lower to the ground if you only want flowers 18" high for example. Single stems easy to pull out if you want it thinned or have stragglers you don't want. Flowers are long blooming and look nice. Repeat bloomer especially if you deadhead. Heidi

I agree with the ID too. We have buttercups growing wild all over the county. Farmers hate them and often spray to get rid of them.
