I tried only moving the plants, which Cullina really says should not be done, but the next time I run across it I will try the seeds if I can collect any. I have his book, and I refer to it all of the time for propagation. Niche is a good place but was even better when Kim owned it. I do go over there occasionally. Thanks for the comments, and if you know of any place in the NC area that is being developed, let us know. We have an organized group that will go out and try to remove plants slated for the bulldozer...if we can get permission, which is really difficult.

The Bremerton acacia shows signs of having frozen to the ground in the past and is of interest precisely because it is just about the only persisting one of much size known in the area. It is exceptional, like the azara in the UW Friendship Grove and the 50' eucryphia near Brian's place in Bremerton. Many others will have been planted elsewhere and frozen out in time. The late J. Witt of the Washington Park Arboretum once told me that there used to be a 50' eucryphia in a garden next door in the Broadmoor Golf and Country Club (most likely planted in the D. Graham garden) but it died in the awful 1955 freeze. An obvious difference between the two sites would be that the Broadmoor location is some miles from salt water, whereas the Bremerton site is quite close. If you are close to the beach the salt water keeps your minimum temperatures higher enough than even areas father inland but close by to make a difference in what you can overwinter. A cottage on Vashon just behind the Seattle/Bainbridge ferry dock has had a tall conspicuous abutilon for years. Even though this is a north exposure, apparently the salt water is keeping it from freezing out. I think I noticed it was still there during a recent visit even after this last winter, although the proof will of course be if it is seen blooming and full again this summer. One of the better embothriums I've seen was growing right behind the beach along a quite inlet west of Tacoma. It was the first bit of plant life behind the cobbles and sand, and was leaning towards the water as though responding to its proximity.

You mean that seed pod is gonna sit there for the next 4 to 6 months????? Ok Anne, I am breathing a little better now. I guess alot of things can happen in that time. There is such a variety of "pollen" around her that there is no telling what her babies would turn out to look like. AND she could also have been pollinated with her own pollen, correct? Oh well, we may see. You have no idea how much I love that plant! Her leaves are so dark and such a perfect teardrop shape! And she is just growing so well! No setbacks whatever! And those beautifully simple flowers in a very pretty blue! I just love her! I must say thank you again for her! I know. Up to my neck in babies, so what is new !?!? I am starting to get mouse ears on my Senk's (oops forgot the name but it has the word blue in it!) Tried to take a pix but in order to see the little babies I needed a magnifying glass! This is all super interesting, thank you so much for sharing and starting this thread. I went looking for chat boards because this year I planted a bunch of black Cherokee Trail of Tears beans, but pods on one plant were white with back beans inside. Beans were also notably a little squarer. Does anyone know if this means anything? Definitely came in the same packet of seeds (from Real Seeds UK) and were the only variety of bean I grew this year.
