I need help with my gardens but don't want to totally start over with a new design and all new plants. Some of what I've done over the years I'm quite happy with but some things just don't cut it! I read books on design, structure, plants, move things around, buy new things but much of the time feel as if I'm spinning my wheels. The process is fun but frustrating at the same time.

With Interior Design, there are people who specialize in working with what you already have, making suggestions for new placement or new purchases if needed. That's the kind of help I need for my Exterior Design - does that exist? Does anyone here know of someone who specializes in that type of garden mini makeover?

I know couple of people who do this kind of work. One of them will be for sure at my plant swap, if you here I will introduce you, another one might stop by, it is busiest time of the year for them.
If you looking to hire someone to do makeover garden or give you plant design Bob Nickolson from Lurvey's is the very best.
He does have talent and vision, I am always glad when he gives me tidbits of his wisdom.
If you are just frustrated by not having a perfect garden right away- join the club, that is where most of us are and that is why we have shovel... My best advice will be to visit as many gardens as you could and see for yourself- what kind of garden makes you feel good- do you need to stuff everything on top of each other or do you like formal arrangements, do you want to have separate beds for spring show, summer and fall or as I do, make sure that every bed has at least one plant at any given day that holds interest. It might never have look of the beds shown in magazines- where everything blooms at same time, but every morning I come out in the garden I discover something new and different- works for me but might not work for you. My garden start early Feb with snowdrops and continues till late fall with aconitums and fall crocuses. but I am messy and double and triple plant everything on top of each other, and yeah, you would not find any empty space here too ;)- saves me from mulching...
do not have "vision" so have to see plants grow before I have ideas what I like where so fall is my favorite time for moving plants and redesigning beds.

Lurvey's, huh? Heard of it, never been there. It's unlikely I'll make it to the swap so won't have the chance to meet your friend(s) unfortunately. I'd love to hire someone to walk the yard with me, bounce some ideas around and I'd just take notes on suggestions made. I don't need a detailed design but do better with a general plan to work from. I seem to have plant ADD and get distracted in mid planting so there's a disjointed quality to my gardens! You've given me some great things to consider - thanks.

What a pity: you'll miss Taste of Chicago by a couple of weeks. Morton Arboretum, if you'd like to see a large arboretum. It's pretty far out in the suburbs. I've been there, but so long ago it doesn't count. http://www.mortonarb.org/ Garfield Park Conservatory was renovated recently. It's located in a bad neighborhood; I wouldn't go there without getting current advice (which mine is not; I haven't lived in the Chicago area for several years). http://www.garfield-conservatory.org/ However, a GW member visited there a couple of years ago and took the L: http://outsideclyde.blogspot.com/2009/06/garfield-park-conservatory.html If you happen to be on State Street and see a large red-brick building with large copper-blue leafy things atop the roof and several giant sculptured owls -- and sheer surprise compels you to cry aloud, "What is that building?" -- it's the (relatively new) main library. To use the car analogy, you can buy a Mercedes or you can buy a VW beetle. Either one is transportation. The Mercedes is a more elite car. The grass seed you buy in the store is fine for most people in most circumstances. It has more weed seed in it than certified sod quality seed, but there's seed in the soil, too, so buying certified sod quality seed doesn't mean you can't have any weeds sprout, just that they won't come in the seed bag. The main reason some people buy seed from specialty stores is that they want to choose elite cultivars and they want to specify which cultivars they get. The cultivars in the bag from the big box store are going to be cultivars that do reasonably well all over the country (or at least all over the country in places that would grow cool season grasses). If you want grass that has the best green in your area, you'll want to choose the cultivar based on the NTEP trials and choose exactly which seeds you want. I've always bought the stuff off the shelf, so I've got one of those "decent but not great" lawns. Actually, the past few years, I've been buying from specialty stores, but that's because I'm replacing my lawn with non traditional turf grasses like streambank wheatgrass and western wheatgrass. So my lawn is now much lighter and closer to blue than a lawn that you'd get from the seeds off the shelf. But I'm trying for a lawn that will live in the desert without the water that a KBG lawn requires, so I'll cede the color for the water saving.

Motria: Last fall, some Chicago person wanted a Maltese Cross plant. Is that you, by any chance? I can bring one. Purple plants: I can bring little seedlings of Tovara Painter's Palette, and I'll get some cuttings of Purple Joe Pye--they should root, if you keep the dirt moist. I'll bring seeds, just in case. I'll bring agastache seedlings, too Linnea: Tomato-wise: I can bring a few seedlings. Unfortunately, no Black Krim, I lost a lot of seedlings when my dad was in the hospital :( Do you still want Siberian Iris? I'm afraid I don't know what color, but I will bring some. Would you like some Goatsbeard cuttings? And, if I could bring you just one foxglove plant (should bloom this year) would that be ok? My Lamb's Ear, started last year, turns out to be...giant mullein! The plants are HUGE, and they are edging the sidewalk! They are crowding out the other plants, as you can imagine.

I think the problem you will face is that this is the busy time of year for most landscapers. You will have more luck finding someone to take on a small job later on in the summer and into the fall.

Have you thought about taking a class or two at the Chicago Botanic Gardens?

Happy anniversary and sorry to hear that you would not be able to make it, promised to be nice gathering.
You welcome to drop by another time, I could share with you wealth of my landscaping skills ;)
Also if you interested I could ask my friend if she would take you as one time customer for visiting your garden and playing off ideas and designs. Am not sure how much such service costs though...

Rachel the Botanic would certainly be easy since I could ride my bike there it's so close - I've just never looked at whats offered beyond the MG program and know I don't want to do that. Thanks for the reminder. I know this is the busy time for professionals but it's also when I'm thinking about it!! I'm not one of those big winter dreamers - until the birds are chirping gardening isn't big on my radar.
