Salvia as a drug teenagers want. I'm not making this up.

I am posting this in multiple forums, so please forgive if you have already seen. As I was driving into my subdivision in the Naperville/Aurora, Il area I noticed and said out loud, "Oh look, they planted Salvia." My 17 year old daughter literally jumped up in her seat and said: "There's Salvia here? Where? Do you know how much money that is worth?" So I said, "Uh...yeah, we have 8 Salvia plants in our front yard. What's the deal?" She said that Salvia is the new drug in demand. It apparantly gives some kind of supreme, but very short high (like 5 mins.) and everyone is looking for it. Knowing how common Salvia is, I showed her that our local nursery has about 20 varieties of annual and 15 varieties of perennial available, including the latin names. She looked at all of the latin names and said, "No, they're looking for a genus that starts with a D." Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Salvia divinorum. (The "divinorum" part must come from "divine" since it's apparently used for shaman and meditation rituals. So "divine" in the sense of both "deity" and "to tell or receive insight, like divining the future.") Wow, teenagers will look to anything for "fun," won't they? Glad my teenage years are (long) behind me. Although it's not like I was in the cool, "in-the-know" crowd as a teenager-- :)

PlantScout lists zero vendors selling this plant (even the nurseries that carry obscure things), so my guess is that it's either not something easily obtainable, or some kind of wildflower form that's not decorative and therefore not readily available/desirable to the home gardener and only available if you trek out somewhere and know what you're looking for. Kind of like how everyone in my day was looking for "mushrooms," but no one really knew or would have recognized the mushroom they were actually looking for. I'm sure a lot of innocent fungi was consumed in the name of partying.

Maybe I'm mean, but I have this mental image of a bunch of teens sitting around huffing on Pineapple Sage or Salvia Caradonna, all fake dreamy-eyed and mumbling, "Man, I'm sooooo wasted!" In any case, I wouldn't worry too much. As I said, it doesn't sound like it's readily available, and in most cases, wildcrafted "drugs" (like wild-harvested marijuana) don't usually have a high enough concentration of anything to really get one high--You have to specifically cultivate something to get high levels of hallucinogen, and I'm convinced that most of the time, the placebo/we're soooo naughty! effect is what's at play. And teens have been known to smoke/ingest anything (oregano, ritalin, cough syrup, etc.) for kicks, so I wouldn't worry too much about this salvia--plenty around the house for them to get into, as well. (I myself have a vivid memory of being at a friend's house on a snow day and getting into her parents' liquor cabinet to make myself a tequila 'n root beer. Tequile and root beer! Just the memory makes me ill...)

There are vendors online who sell the leaves of salvia divornum. It is to get high with. The salvia in your yard doesn't qualify.

Wouldn't surprise me if all of the sudden your plants 'disappear' though leaving only teenager sized footprints behind ;-)

Maybe go leave a 6 pack of cheap beer amongst your plants to see if you can't get those vermin to take leave your plants alone ;-)

Alternately I understand broadcasting Milli Vanilli may work as a sonic deterent.

Lefleur1 and prairiemoon--My sure fire earwig bait. I have never set this out in the evening without having some earwigs in the container in the morning. Note--baby earwigs are grey and turn red as they age so don't think it is another bug. Baby earwigs are ravenous when they hatch and can strip a plant down to the stem in 1 night Bait for Earwigs. Equal parts of full salt soy sauce, cooking oil and (molasses or corn syrup). The molasses or syrup is bait to attract them--the oil doesn't allow them to crawl back out and the salt in the soy sauce finishes them off and makes the mixture dark so they think it is just a hole. Put it in a small containerÃ¯Â¿Â½Ã¯Â¿Â½" I use those small scoops from laundry soap and place a stone on top but you can use any small container even the bottom of a soda or water bottle and anything for a lid. Cover 1/2 inch of the bottom of the container with the mixture and bury it up to the brim in the soil where you have a problem with them. Prop a lid over it so it doesn't get diluted by rain and so it is a nice dark place for them to hide for the day--ha. When you prop the lid, leave a small space for them to crawl into the container. You might have to wait a couple of days for it to work, but the first time I tried it I used a baby food bottle and it was full to the brim with little grey baby earwigs the next morning. I was surprised at just how many I did get. Try it. It really works

Salvia Divinorum is one of the more intense hallucinogenic drugs out there. Many people liken it to a quicker and less spiritual version of DMT. It can be found in either the very potent "extract" form or in dried leaves. It is smoked and leads the user into a 3-7minute (on average) trip. In the lower grade trips you may see closed eye visuals and have some physical effects. Contrary to what was written above, I've never had much trouble moving around, or running, while on weaker trips. In more intense trips, the user can experience ego death, or a total loss of self, where the world is stripped away. This can be terrifying or amazingly freeing. Strong trips usually contain open eye visuals as well, although sometimes all reality can be lost track of. Why it is still legal is beyond me, aside from the fact that it didn't get publicity until recently. Once it is illegal it will most likely die out as it is more expensive and less rewarding than conventional hallucinogens such as mushrooms or lsd. In two days it will be illegal in Illinois. believe it not,caffine is a huge contributor to anxiety. First panic attack I had was cuz I drank several cups of coffee.In fact,everytime I drink coffee (which I love the taste of) I have a panic attack. Usually I can tolerate a soda,but I have pretty much completely cut out all caffine. My family and friends think I'm wussy for this. I have been on .025 mil. of xanax for the last almost 5 years. it was the only real thing that helped my anxiety attacks. But I started slowly weaning myself off.One every other day,then every two days.Got to the point where I only began taking them if actualy really needed them,which for a while was once a week,then once a month.Sometimes I'd even break them in half and only take a half. Now I have been off for 5 months.I still kinda need one around PMS time,when anxiety runs the worst for me,but I deal without best I can. Exercise does help alot.It gets out pent up energy and tension. Hot warm baths to relax tense muscles. Also,you may look into getting one of those massage chairs. Intimate contact helps too. During my worst attack,I was shaking and having terrible thoughts.My husband layed beside me and just held me until I finally fell asleep out of exsaustion.Now when I'm really tense,I hate to be crude,but having sex helps alot too. I also find,I try not to dwell on being mad or upset.The more I do,the more likely to have an attack. You need to detox though before you do anything.Quiting cold turkey could be very dangerous at this point. And...you will have some side effects from quitting like insomnia. I do occasionally still deal with that as my biggest withdrawl. I really know how you feel though.It is so terrible to be run by anxiety.Alot of people dont understand or think you are making it up.

My Family has severe drop-itis, but I have it too. Also, I have more hobbies than they do and like many women, more of the stuff in the home is seen as "mine." Also, I am more likely to make a mess but EVENTUALLY pick it up ( I get organizing and cleaning spurts) , rather than create the archeological piles my other family members accumulate. Very frequently I want to rant at DH or DD about their mess. But, if I look around, I see, my laundry is not put away, I have a pile of mag's here, some gardening stuff there... I have made up my mind to work through all of my own clutter, habits, zones--whatever--meanwhile picking up others' stuff as much as I wish, or not, and just not say ANYTHING until I think I am in control of my own habits and stuff. I mean, I want to be able to look at a room and honestly see nothing there that I caused, did, bought, dropped, causing a problem. Because I know that that is what is bothering me the most--my own habits that I would like to change. In my family, there's not a big fuzzy feeling of "let's get organized together." And I don't feel comfortable spilling the blame out of frustration with my own problems. I also am taking a hard look at all my "homemaker" jobs and streamlining them ruthlessly--simpler groceries, meals, hobbies--so I don't blame someone else for my "complicated" life. I am lucky that my family also, to their credit, does not sit around expecting Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart. Instead, I'm the one who likes to cut and arrange flowers, or change the throw pillows, or cook, and then I find, maybe I took on too much for all of what else we've got going on, and no one to blame but me. This doesn't mean that DD or DH would not have their own chores or responsibilities or that I can't say to DD, please pick up your stuff from the den, we're trying to tidy up today. It just means I've decided not to aim any "we're such a mess!" at them at this point, because I don't feel I'm a good example myself, yet. For me, I need that feeling of personal control to have credibility to ask someone else to try to do more to help.

My teenager did the same double-take last year. We looked it up to make sure it wasn't the kind I had in my yard (so none of his friends would dig it up). Not that they would anyway; most of them have a little common sense. But it's funny that you mentioned the morning glory seeds because there was an article in the Chicago Tribune about MG seeds & teens a little over a week ago--a column from the Washington Post actually, and it's still on the website at www.chicagotribune.com if you search for "morning glory."

Why do teenagers do stupid things? As a teenager myself I would never think of doing alcohol or drugs because I saw what it did to other members of my family. Who (I surmised) would want to live that way?
Now, of course, I have a 16 year old step-daughter who is getting out of control. We've just discovered that she has been sneaking out of the house to smoke cigarettes (something we don't allow at our house due to allergies). Last week we discovered that she and one of her friends stole an IPOD and camera from a girl at church. Oh yeah, and the kicker was calling 911 TWICE! on Easter Sunday to say there was a shooting at our church. Fun fun!

I'm going to be so glad when the teenage years are over!
