new to wildflowers

Hello!

I recently purchased some seed from my local nature center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I bought the following:

Butterfly Weed, Pitcher Sage, Gayfeather, Purple Cornflower.

I have never grown wildflowers before, but have a few areas along my fence line and around a shed that I would love to have them. The soil is not great. It has heavy clay in some places and can be slightly rocky also. I planned on adding a layer of good soil to put them in, but wondered if a light layer is required or a deep layer for them to do well. Also, I am in zone 7b and the danger of frost is pretty well over, so, can I sow directly or should I start in pots first?

Any polite advice is welcome:) (I emphasize polite as I have received, not so polite, advice in the past)

Thanks a bunch!

Jennifer
