Hi all,

After a long hiatus from gardenweb I figured I should come back and share with you my little labor of love. The website has been around for awhile but I recently moved it to a new domain and added some galleries to browse by flower color.

I don't think it will ever be complete but I hope it may serve some use to those of you who like gardening with native plants.

Thanks for sharing. I have bookmarked it to review on a dark, rainy day. I know it will help us. Every book and website I see has a slightly different photo of a plant, so it helps to ID things when you see all of these. Again, thanks.

Lpinkmountain has given you a bunch of good suggestions, (& probably Eric also, though I didn't follow his links.) I have several additions of native trees, most of which I grow. Oxydendron arboreum would probably stay within your size requirements. Acer pensylvanicum tops out at about 35', has green and white striped bark, decorative dangling clusters of spring flowers (tho small and green) and yellow fall color and is a woodland native. Several native viburnums are small to medium, multistemmed trees: V. lantana, V. cassinoides &/or nudum (taxonomy is up in the air), V. prunifolium. all have white spring flowers in flat panicles, late summer to fall berries, and good fall color. Prunus americana, flowering plum, is a small native spring flowering tree with pink to white blooms. I don't know if it meets your requirement of long-lived, but the ones I know have been around 20+ years and are still plugging away. I didn't find any reference to how long they typically live. I don't know if you want to consider them as well, but there are some native large shrubs that include Clethra alnifolia (likes wetlands, has white to pink late summer flowers and golden fall foliage), Fothergilla major (white spring flowers and red to orange fall color), several of the native deciduous rhododendrons, rhus typhina (staghorn sumac, which suckers, but has the most gorgeous fall colors of any plant I know), Ilex verticillata (deciduous, nonprickly winter berry holly), and high bush blueberries. One additional note: I have Cornus alternifolia growing in full sun and full shade and every light level in between, and it's truly a four season tree: creamy white panicles of spring flowers, late summer berries (dark blue with bright red stems) and nice overall shape, peachy fall foliage, and great winter branch structure. It's fuller in sun than in shade, had more blooms, and is nicer foliage color.

Over the past couple of years I have assembled an 8 page list of mail order northeast North American biome native plant nurseries and retail establishments who will ship plant materials. (Some do sell exotics.) From all my looking I think this is the most comprehensive grouping youÂll find. While one should support their local plant material suppliers I put this together because of the small number of easily accessible natives nurseries in the northeast. Folks concerned about genotype will find suppliers from closer to you on this list. IÂm in the community of Jamaica Plain in Boston and we're less concerned about conservation grade genotype. I have this list in a PDF and can make it available to folks, but I'm not sure how to do this other than to share it via email. My email is aihrer@gmail.com drop me a note and I'll forward it along. (My computer is kept very clean of viruses etc. and please don't spam me.) In the future IÂll be putting together a list of northeast North American natives nurseries who donÂt ship. you might try blue stone perrenials on line first, but they are in madison-geneva ohio area. also, because i just heard it on the radio Holden Arboreteum is having its plant sale this weekend-- thats out in kirkland. you'd have to google that too. also the Ohio Ag school in Wooster is having it's Plant Discovery Day this week end or next-- another check it on line. diggerb

I got my lowbush wild blueberry from Edge of the Woods Nursery. It's near Fogelsville and from Bloomsburg maybe just under two hours. Worth a trip because the whole nursery is very cool. They have highbush varieties too, all are wild. Call them before you head out, they can give you advice it it's worth a trip. Also check maybe with Penn State Cooperative Extension, they may have a list of recommended cultivars. My blueberry bush took a beating this winter from devil bunnies. Thanks for a nice website, I have browsed it many times while researching plants and really enjoyed looking through your photos. The fact that you usually have multiple photos is helpful.

Your site is even in my bookmarks in a Native Plants folder - with your other url (web.syr.edu). I will update the bookmark!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. The website started as a way for me to learn the plants. Even though I had the pictures it has always been a challenge to keep the names fresh in my mind. Speaking of my old url, for some reason I can no longer access my syr account and I maxed out the space a long time ago, which is why I decided to pay for hosting. I really like the new space as I have so much more freedom in how I use it.

ahughes, since coming to NY I have recieved my BS in environmental biology and will be (hopefully) finishing my MS in plant ecology in the next few months. Hope your studies are going well.
