Well, the verdict is in, and it is not good news. Alas, it is a Carrot Wood. I looked at the links, and a few others, and one picture from a third party source looks like it could have been taken in my front yard, so I feel fairly confident that the nail has been hit on the head. I will yank it out this weekend as it is invasive and threatening to mangroves and we are a literal stones throw from a protected river area and several wonderful mangrove lined canals. Sigh. I'm hesitant to attempt a new Oak based on our last miserable experience. I had hoped this was a nice little sucker. Maybe I'll just bury a handful of acorns and cross my fingers...

Thank you purplestar, 'muriel waterman' very much looks like the one, although the photos that I found online weren't as vivid or rich in color, so if not the same one, I know I am on the right track. Thanks paul t23, the camera that took these is a simple Canon Powershot Pro 1. It is basically an 8.0 MP point and shoot, but it has a very versatile lens and 7.0 optical zoom, with a very easy to use macro setting. If you can believe it, this brom looks better in person than on film, the picture just doesn't do it justice. Thanks for looking and more to come!

I've been trying to get rid of it from my yard for about 15 years now. Fill a garbage can up, and a few weeks later there are what seems like thousands of new sprouts. I even have one that is growing up near the crown of a cabbage palm (out of reach).
