native red monarda (didyma)

does anyone know where to get seeds for this monarda? i've looked all over the internet and can't find seeds of purely the red variety, and not a cultivar, just the original. i thought this plant was native to ohio and that it would be easy to find. any suggestions?

The New England Wild Flower Society sells straight red mondarda. You have to join the organization to buy seeds from them, but they are a good cause.

Hi, terrene. The funny thing is that the sage (purple) and the lavender (English) both endure wind and alternate shade/sun during most of the season. Not to mention some weird climber weed (not ivy) that invaded from who-knows-where. I frequently have to untwine it from the other plants. They may not be magazine-perfect but I love them anyway. :D (Some varieties of lavender seem pickier than others about where they grow.) digginginthedirt, the sad thing is that last time, I think I watered them *too* well, and the poor things mildewed. :o They were in part shade, as is most of my yard. Well, there's a very slim portion of the yard that gets Southern exposure. Maybe I could make a place for them, but it'll probably have to wait for next year since I have too many half-started projects on my plate this year already. ;)

Maybe we can do a trade next year :D .....and btw, Solana, I don't believe I'll be getting any seed from the Datura this year (sniff sniff). I have two annual monardas in my field. Monarda citriodora and Monarda punctata. They are spreading, by seeding out in my field. I love them but this is not a garden in a traditional sense. I have two paper bags on my porch waiting for me to sow out in my front field. I collected the M. punctata from the Tent Rocks canyon in New Mexico. It is native to my county in Texas, but I have not seen it around . IT has proven to be very happy here. I do have to yank it out in the spring where I do not want it , mostly around my small cactus.. It loves that sandy soil. I find that the concept of the "mixed border" is constraining to many species that naturally want to make a sizable clump. Some plants need quite a bit of real-estate to be happy. My memory of the clump of a perennial monarda is one of them. I would not want to call it a garden thug, just a plant with big feet. I removed it out of my wet zone because it was too big for that area. and too much of a water lover for my dry hill. Monarda fistula was another more East Texas native who did not like my thin soil. It took a could of years to get all the roots from around the grey water pipe but it I did. It would grow but not bloom because of lack of sun under the oaks.

Actually, you don't have to join NEWFS to buy, but there are advantages to doing so, and you've got to move quickly, sales close in mid-March.

I've grown the species from seed and not found it a wonderful plant. A little limp; actually, a lot limp. From the pictures I've seen, the cultivars are taller with bigger flowers and stand up straighter. But mine may not get quite enough sun (or maybe moisture as well) where I have it and may suffer from that. Note to self: Put it on the list -- time for a monarda move!

They grow wonderfully in the NC mts. in seeps where there is a patch of sun. I have tried some in drier sites, and they did not do well. I plan to collect seeds next year if the plants are still in the place for which I have permission. There WAS a big stand of them where someone built a house AND channeled the spring away from them. In two years they were all gone. So, apparently they do need more water than other monardas. Oh, same for the Gray's lily that was nearby. What a shame as it is a plant that is threatened or endangered in most areas.
