I think Nearly Native Nursery in Fayetteville would have a lot of what you're interested in. They are closed for most of the month but will reopen after February 25th. I'll link their website below. They have azaleas and viburnums. I also found a couple of 3 gallon native azaleas at Home Depot last year (they had sweetshrub too, including the 'Athens' cultivar). Lazy K is near Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, by the way. I would not be surprised to find that Nearly Native gets their azaleas from Lazy K, many places do. Nearly Native also lists a couple of lesser known native evergreen shrubs: Dirca palustris and Osmanthus americanus. Check on wax myrtles too. I really like Illicium floridanum, but it can handle only morning sun. You can get some viburnums this weekend at the GNPS Symposium on Saturday. There will be a few there to tie in with the presentation on native viburnums. Suggestions for other sun perennials: Asclepias tuberosa (or other Asclepias, known as butterfly weed), Penstemon digitalis (beardtongue), Goldenrod (Solidago 'Fireworks' is a good one), Verbena canadensis 'Homestead Purple' (more of a ground cover), Mouse eyed coreopsis ('Nana') is a good performer. All of the Native Azaleas grown by Lazy K (Ernest Koone) are potted. There is another wholesale nursery near me that sells Native Azaleas and they also grow them in pots. Native Azaleas are not typically field grown because the long lateral, shallow tap root would make them difficult to machine dig without excessive root damage and once extracted by hand digging, would have to be transported bare root, unless they are small plants. I have rescued many from construction sites and if soaked and replanted within a few hours, the survival rate can approach 100%, but if the roots are allowed to become thoroughly dried, survival rate declines significantly. An alternative method of field growing trees & shrubs is using an especially developed bag to contain the roots and makes machine extraction relatively simple, but I'm not aware of anyone using the method for Native Azaleas, as they enjoy only a limited market, primarily individual gardeners.

I agree with Soeur about seed. Any native azalea will grow from seed. I collect seed capsules in Oct/Nov. As the capsules open up the seed falls out. It can be sown either Fall or Spring. I use nursery flat filled with a bark mix, put 1/2" of sphagnum moss on top, wet it down real good and lightly sprinkle seed on top, cover with a piece of glass. Within two weeks you will have hundreds of seedlings. It may also be possible to collect seed now because some of the capsules may not be completely empty. Cuttings of selections and hybrids can be taken in June, treated with hormone, stick in 50/50 mix of peat and perlite and place under mist. They should root within 4 to 6 weeks. Pot them up in pints in early August. If you don't have mist, seed is the way to go. Sam
