ground cover help

I have a 6ft berm with 3 spruce spaced on top. The berm is quite steep, and my mulch seems to run into the yard after a hard rain. Any suggestions for ground covers?

Much depends on how much sun the berm is exposed to- and how much water the ground will receive under the boughs of the pines- and then- what your likes are- >Bishops weed, ajuga, archangle lambium, seedum, thyme, daylillies, ferns, sundrops, monarda, phlox, crown vetch, ranunculis, sedges, vinca, from stepables to easily spreading and reseeding plants, there is a world of choices available- and many can be gathered at other gardens- I would suggest you make a choice and ask for some- swap or otherwise- that is the nature of ground covers- all too soon there are too many and one must remove them to somewhere..... I have several that there is more than enough to share!

Julie helped me out last spring as well as others in the group. I have some sedum if you want any. It is hard to plant anything under pines though.

Solidly paving the ledges with concrete would make the water flow worse, not better. You need to slow it down, and get it to soak in. Plants are the absolutely best way to do that. They do not harbor vermin you need to worry about. Start your flood control efforts by the trees at the rear, or by the fence behind them. For now, use anti-erosion tubes : make rolls of straw or dry leaves or wood shavings and burlap and lay them across the slope of the terraces every couple of feet, held in with wooden stakes. You have probably seen these, but way longer, across the slopes of construction sites. On the uphill side of the tubes, start planting perennials with deep roots: ornamental grasses, shrubs, dense ground covers, etc. Whatever grows well in your area.

Have you been to your local garden center (or good retail nursery - not a box store)? West coast nurseries are open year round and a local one will carry a range of plants suitable for your specific location and most have staffing that will assist you in making informed choices based on your growing conditions. Rupturewort, Herniaria glabra, is a tough, low growing evergreen groundcover that is adapatable to both sun and shade and is tolerant of heavy soils. It doesn't do much - few flowers - but it takes foot traffic well. I don't mean this as a slam at you Judy, but I always wonder why folks don't access local resources first before posting on what is essentially a forum with worldwide readership.

Go roaming around local parks and streams look near the crown of the trees there usually plenty moss in damp places. You can also look for moss in sunny spots then use those for sunny areas of your yard. Once you find moss you like look up "moss milkshake" and make it.
