Need Ground cover (moss) help.

What I currently have is grass (tough stuff) and very hard soil. Some of it is thinly graveled.

I want to replace the grass and also have something that covers the gravel. I would like something like moss that doesn't need to be mowed but having trouble finding a suitable type.

Maybe moss is not what I need. It is for Northwest Washington weather.

Whatever is used I want it to take over (choke-out) the grass on its own. I don't want to go through the drama of removing the grass. Pretty much want to sprinkle seeds.

What is it that can do that?

Go roaming around local parks and streams look near the crown of the trees there usually plenty moss in damp places. You can also look for moss in sunny spots then use those for sunny areas of your yard. Once you find moss you like look up "moss milkshake" and make it.

You could look into seeding poa supina. The drawbacks are it's expensive, and it takes a while to get established. Of course it needs to be mowed periodically which might be an issue in NYC. From what I have read though it does well in shade and can handle a good amount of traffic stress once established.

At least for our climate, you're deciding once and for all. Ajuga will spread into your lawn and be virtually impossible to eradicate in a couple years, but that makes it a good ground cover too (lol).

Not to be a smart aleck but how about grass? ;> It depends on what you want as far as 'edible'. Lots of animals eat grass like deer.

Thanks GG.... C_P.. You should see my yard. There's a moss that is very fine ..velvet-like, that has captured 25% of it. I live on the edge of a marsh. I personally like the moss. (kinda have to like it - or spend big $$ fighting nature) House is in the trees.. the other 'moss' is out in the pasture. I thought it must be an evergreen, but then GG says; "(although some mosses are remarkably drought tolerant!!)" ...so maybe, because it's mostly dry up front. Thanks again. Jim
