Ilex decidua questions

I really, really want a possumhaw and Woodlander's has the 'Warren's Red' and the male pollinators. My question is how close together do they need to be planted? The spots I have in mind are about 50'-75' apart.

That's plenty close. The insects do all the work for you, and it sounds like you have some insects around. You won't find much better plants for your area than Woodlander's will provide.

Take the opportunity to observe the flowering closely, to see what the difference is on male/female flowers in the genus Ilex. Then you'll always be able to determine sex on unknown plants when they are in flower.

How is life at Viburnum Valley? I appreciate the recommendation of possumhaw. I managed to purchase several online 2 years ago. I bought "Warrens Red", "Council Fire" and "Grace". "Warrens Red" died to ground first winter even though it was touted as the hardiest of the Deciduas. "Grace" came through w/minimal dieback and she looks like a winner. Best of the lot to date.

My grouping of them is having a good year this year but in years past they were wimpy. It seems to me that the older they are the better they make fruit. My oldest ones have been in the ground 3 years. My one years have no berries at all this year. My male is within 12 feet of all of them and there is a bee hive 30 feet away. I've always thought it was something to do with the weather that affected whether they made a lot of berries or not - I've never heard or read any explanation for it.

"Holly, am I mistaken or do you live in Colorado AND are in Z5?" I do live in Colorado, in the Denver Metro area. Now, I used to be in Zone 5A - just last year; now when I check the various gardening zone sites my zip code is coming up as Zone 5B, and one site even showed zone 5-6. Guess I need to update my profile here on Garden Web! The USDA just updated their zone map this year - it was last done in 1990. Here is a quote from a Syracuse NY blog I found: "The new map uses 30 years of temperature data, from 1976 to 2005. The 1990 map was based on temperature data from 1974 to 1986." Though the naysayers claim there is no such thing as global warming, I think we can see that things are warming up. its a conifer/tree .... please don't love it to death ... i do NOT know the answer to the acid question ... but otherwise... plant it in mother earth ... mulch it properly ... you are responsible for all water this year.. insert finger to 3 to 6 inches and make sure the root ball is damp .... but not wet .... next year.. water only in drought .... the third year.. it should be pretty much free range .... do NOT repot it ... all conifers do best in full sun ... but if that is where you are going to do it.. you might leave it in the pot. ... or sink the whole pot until the weather starts to cool in fall ... please.. just don't love it to death ... good luck ken

Any male holly that blooms at the same time as your ilex decidua can polinate the female - that is the key - that they bloom at the same time. I'm not sure when the ilex decidua blooms, but I have read that Foster's holly is a pollinator for it, and surely there's some of those around you, they are a pretty popular holly. The polinator can be as far away as a mile. Them little bees travel!

Pure luck that I even saw this post, but thanks. Glad that you are having some possumhaw to enjoy. It's that freak western New York weather; what's a southern belle like Ilex decidua to do?

Life at the Valley is full of viburnums this year; plowed some new ground and lots of young-uns planted out. Oh, and hot at the bloom chart. Write me for an XL version, or teach me how to post it for all to partake.
