Looking at the seeds (light and wind carry-able)and finding out it grows a rhizome I can see how this might turn quite invasive. SO before it flowers and before it gets out of a pot I will make sure to talk to the extension folks. In the mean time... Anyone know a better planting option for warding off insects mainly ants from the house? I have heard its great at keeping the ants away. But if its going to take over.. might be more advisable to shot gun with rue, lavender and Artmisia. I know I can get rue going... limited success with lavender, never pulled off Artemsia. I do have a flat with soil no seed, maybe ill fill it with whatever I can come up with and acquire on a pest control plant Google. Starting this late in the season may be the thing that will be the success in some of these I have previously been unable to sprout. Bobbie, I don't see your email; I'm not sure what happened to it. I received a ton a responses and all plants are claimed. I did get a really nice idea for leftovers of next year's sale...I'm going to try and find a nursing home or similar place to donate them to. Isn't that a cool idea? I met a woman who's volunteering her time to put in a garden at one such place and of course they don't have much of a budget. Sounds like the people there are really enjoying their new, albeit half empty, garden!

What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.

Unless you disturb or interfere with them, bees won't sting. I have gardened for more than 40 years with a huge assortment of flowering plants AND bees, and I have been stung once.....and that's because I stepped on it :-) It s a different story with wasps or hornets but they are not necessarily attracted to flowering plants in teh same way that bees are. There are very few flowers that bees are NOT attracted to and even fewer that repel them. Generally if the flowers are very shy pollen producers or the pollen is difficult to access, bees will be less active on those. Be careful with what you read online. Many of the sources are less than reliable and the information they impart may be incorrect. Bees DO visit foxgloves - they love them!! - and they are often attracted to red flowers if the pollen and nectar levels meet their approval - monarda often comes with bright red flowers and they don't call this plant bee balm for nothing!!
