Do Moonflower seeds need to be stored cold?

Last year my purchased moonflower seeds germinated very easily. This year, the seeds that I harvested had only a 10% germination rate. I kept them in a cool basement during the winter. Should I store them in a colder place? Perhaps the refrigerator? I did put them in a wet towel in the refrigerator over night before planting, but not too much luck...

This was my first year starting (or having any) Moonflowers from seeds. I bought the packet in early spring. Never chilled them and got probably 90% germination. They germinated better than my morning glories, cardinal climber, and certainly cobea.

I soaked them in regular room temp. water overnight first.

Not sure that they need a chill.

Natanya, there are many columbine/aquilegia, do you know which you have? They have different germination requirements, some will germinate after a chill of a couple of weeks, some with no chill and can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks to several months to germinate at room temp, others need many months at approx 40F. And the chill (if needed) has to be moist to do any good. Dry in the refrigerator is just storage - a chill to stratify must be done moist.

I think once the pods turn brown, the seeds are ripened. The seeds are supposed to be pale (white/light yellow) that's how you know it's fresh seed. Even the seed in commercial packets are white. I'm hoping the frost won't get my vine before the rest of the pods ripen, because they do take a very long time in doing so. I hope this helps! Monica

Most vegetable seeds must be well-dried before storage, and kept that way. Many flowers & herbs, on the other hand, require stratification (extended cold treatment) before they will germinate. Note that the procedures used for long-term seed storage, and those for treating seed to be planted next season, may differ. You could conceivably be using more than one method at once for the same seeds. Some seed catalogs, particularly those that deal with herbs & exotics (such as J. L. Hudson) list the special germination requirements for their seed.

Hi, Most annuals don't need a cold period to germinate. There are a few exceptions like poppies. Biennials like hollyhocks often need a cold period. As you already know tender perennials don't need a cold period. Many perennials need a cold period especially those originally from northern areas as you guessed. Some perennials don't, but they will often germinate at a higher rate after a cold period than regular sowing. Winter sowing is a great method. If you haven't been over there, check out the Winter Sowing Forum. Here, I try to get my perennial seed containers out by the end of Jan./beginning of Feb. Where you are, you probably need to get them out at the beginning of Jan. Oh, and the proper term is Cold Stratification. : ) Remy
