As Ken said/implied, the choice of a tree depends on if you want to garden under the tree, and how wide you want it to be - I assume another tall (over 60-75') tree is OK. Also, do you have to deal with hurricanes and their aftermaths, as they run up the Mississippi valley? If you do/will, then you want a tree that will survive strong winds. There was a recent listing of trees that survived high winds, so you might look at that, as well. Other recommendations might include bald or pond cypress, tulip tree, honey locust, possibly river birch ('Dura Heat'), Southern magnolia - NO gardening under it, but fastish growing after a few years (I have one that is now, after 4-5 years, about 12-15' tall, and that with minimal watering) - and various oaks. I am sure there are other, regional, stalwarts for shade trees, I just don't know them... As you drive around the various neighborhoods, esp. in the older ones, keep your eyes open for trees you like - most people are reasonably amenable to questions about their trees, although you may get a good number of "I dunno" answers. I would also go to public parks, the zoo, the local arboretum and university campuses, to see what trees they have, and see what you like. There, you might have a better chance of getting a precise answer to "what tree is that?", from grounds keepers, Parks Dep't and the like.

I would say common hackberry, Celtis occidentalis, for both of them - but one or more could be Sugarberry, which is also a type of hackbery, Celtis laevigata. Either way, they are both definitely hackberries of one kind or another.

J0nd03- that ft.mcnair is a beautiful tree. Ill have to see what the specs are on it as far as tolerances/preferences. Tornado- no offense taken at all, I'm quite long winded myself (I am a car salesman!) and I love taking politics but unfortunately from what I have learned (perhaps its the area we live in?) most discussions about politics/govt matters turn into a pissing contest/yelling match because when someone has a differeing view than I yet cannot support their claims/reasons for their beliefs they get defensive and resort to un civilized behavior. I think it's hilarious but sure you have experenced it as well! ;) I really appreciate the info your giving me. From what I have read/picked up from folks (a good friend of mine is a horticulture major/landscape business owner) these beech trees will maintain their vibrant foliage as long as they are kept hydrated. I'm site the tree in your pics gets pruned/pest control done professionally and regularly but I'm not sure about the watering part too much?

The plant swap & event planning have me in an "organizing flurry.
