Found these 2 in a State Park parking lot, need ID help, with pic

I had my Arbor Day Foundation "What Tree is That" book with me and came up with black gum (Nyssa Sylvatica) which just doesn't match the bark of leaves of any I've seen on line.

From the pics you can't tell, but they're large trees, probably sixty foot tall, and located about 20 miles north of St. Louis at Pere Marquette State Park. My other guess was some kind of cherry tree, but the bark seems wrong for black cherry.

They're planted close together and I did notice the bark difference but believe them to be the same species. The leaf color were near identical but look different thanks to my camera phone. They both had the same small berry like fruit. Thanks in advance for any help.
