Help with Crape Myrtle

Please Help!! I received and transplanted several crape myrtles from a neighbor around 5 years ago. I noticed just recently, after several high wind thunderstorms moved through, that one of the crape myrtles had a split in one of the trunks. This mrytle has two main trunks and is about 7+ feet tall with large flowering blooms.

Is there anyway to save it? The split trunk on the one branch is still attached right at the ground. Can it be saved, by mending/wrapping the trunk? Can it be chopped at the ground and regrow? What should I do with the intact trunk? Help!!
