Substitute for foxgloves

Hi there, I hope someone can help me. I live waaaaayyy up north, north of East Grand Forks, in the Red River Valley. Anyway I love foxgloves, and lupine, needless to say neither one will grow for me. Being the eternal optimist, I bought and planted them both yet again in another spot in my yard this year! It's frustrating!

I have decided that if they don't come back for me next spring (again) that it's time to find an alternative. Does anyone one know of a zone 3 hardy, tall spiky plant, in awesome colors that would give the same type of feel in the garden as foxgloves?

The same questions applies to lupine.

Thanks

Jenny P
