Comments (3)I'm not an expert but from what I've heard about the Giant Sequoia is that they like a lot of water so I think it should be fine....See MoreWill my Weeping Giant Sequoia ever grow back?
Comments (17)In a great many of the situations asked about here it makes no difference if the existing or proposed planting being discussed will some day be seen 60 ft tall or only half that - the site will still be overwhelmed. And even if the party asking about a particular kind of tree may never see it as big as it gets they will have left behind a tree removal problem - including the associated expense - for somebody else in the future. With all the time that was spent developing an unsuitably large choice that ended up being cut down time that otherwise could have been used producing a wonderful old example of a plant that was in scale with the location. It is also very often the case that if a tree lasts long enough in a given area to be at all feasible as a landscape specimen it also does well enough there to produce a full sized one. Or at least one that is still bigger than what was originally envisioned - many people plant trees where what they really needed was a shrub. I have heard something like "15 ft" given repeatedly as an example of how big somebody wanted that "tall tree" they were looking for to grow. Some even appear to think that anything growing above the level of their own head is "tall"....See MoreGiant sequoia is dying
Comments (22)its stressed ... repotting it will only stress it more .. DO NOT REPOT.. until it stabilizes ... some professionals believe that pots can be too big ... that it actually stunts growth ... spending too much time trying to fill the pot with roots ... so they grow in a given pot.. until the roots hit the sides and start down .. and then repot ... to the next bigger size ... the whole point of the potting media.. is a water management system ... the media allowing the water to run thru the whole mass.. and then shed the excess ... when improperly potted.. water either runs to sides and down the pot side ..or it can only flow thru the middle .. and right out the bottom.. with no water hitting where the roots are spreading thru the pot ... and pot size can be part of that equation ... trees grow in mother earth ... and you are making it infinitely harder.. trying to grow what will be a massive tree.. in a pot .. i killed way too many trees in pots.. before i figured out how different they were from the usual annual/perennials that are grown in pots ... soooo.. you are starting with a very hard project ... so dont be surprised.. if it isnt easy ... ken...See MoreOverwinter Seedlings in NY Zone 6 Giant Sequoia, Dawn/Coast Redwood
Comments (9)You didn't say if you've been growing them indoors or outside. I like to take advantage of the summer months and leave my seedlings outside all summer in partial sun/shade so they build roots and photosynthesize, all the way into late Fall when cool nights and diminished sun exposure causes the seedlings to go dormant. Next, place them somewhere that stays cool enough so the stay dormant (35f-45f degrees). You want to be able to check on them so they don't dry out and secure enough so varmints can't prune them off for you. I've never grown in zone 6 so I assume it's a lot easier than zone 3 where I live....See MoreBlueAng
