Can I move a clematis now?

Sorry, I don't know the variety but it has been languishing in the shade since we moved in. It has never bloomed since we've been here and I'm thinking I've got nothing to lose by trying to move it into a sunny spot. Can I do that now without causing too much trauma?

If you don't see signs of blooms, or don't mind sacrificing the chance of it blooming this year (which doesn't sound likely), I say go for it. I never mind much about preferred transplanting times unless the plant is fussy (which then it wouldn't be growing in my gardens) or I really want to wait until after it's bloomed.

Thanks for the support..I think I'll do it. I'm with you on transplanting times. I've heard you're not supposed to move peonies except at certain times but I've moved 'em whenever and they've bloomed fine...

I would go ahead and do it now. So it gets settled before winter. I know it is spring now but the longer settled the better in your zone. Keep it well fertilized and watered and it should be fine. You might lose some blooms but it will be much bigger and later if you wait for it to flower.

Scootini, your Tie Dye will be FINE if you move it now. Since you had planted it, it would NOT have had the chance to yet produce many new roots. Just the same, do be careful when you do dig! Terry

Can I move a rose to the ground now?

My garage is attached but not heated. I have overwintered roses as well as other plants successfully by putting the pots close to the inside wall without additional protection, and they actually wake up and bloom earlier than their outdoor counterparts, so I believe the garage provides a micro environment that is zone 6 or higher. I have also heard that non-attached non-heated shed is no more than a wind breaker and won’t protect the plants much at all. I didn’t know transplanting dormant roses is common. I will definiteLu experiment with this using my least favorite ones first :)

Can you wait until late summer or early fall to move? That would be much better. But if you absolutely must move now, do so on a cooler, cloudy or overcast day and dig and relocate promptly. And keep the plant properly hydrated. Most iris are summer dormant or their roots are inactive during the summer months and so they do not take as well to transplanting during that time frame.

I moved it to day it it seems fine. It took some untangling though. Is there any chance it will bloom this year or am I being greedy?

How 'bout we color you Hopeful...after all, isn't that something all gardeners share (plus the outlet to express the two most basic urges of humans)? :-)

It would be more likely, I think, if it's a later blooming type, but there's no telling with plants. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed for you.
