I really shouldn't be allowed to post on a gardening forum because it gives the impression that I have a clue about flower gardening, which is UNTRUE. I've just been looking at my pathetic flower (huh!) garden. It's a jumbled mess of coneflowers, brugmansias, some bee balm, crispy hostas and other assorted stragglers. I have ABSOLUTELY NO idea how to arrange perenials so that they look good together ALTHOUGH I read about this constantly, and I can even spout the correct terminology! Somehow when I go out there, I just can't get things to work together. Also, I never believe that anything will grow so I don't leave enough space for it, then it grows and so I end up with severe overcrowding in some spots, and blank spots in others. I would pay someone to give me a consultation and some pointers. I'm outside of Annapolis, and have 4 beds which I'm struggling with. Would anyone be interested? I would love to have a cottage garden look, but I'm finding this very tricky to do. I guess I need a garden mentor of sorts.

Things are probably not near as bad as you think they are.
I might even have some plants I can give to you for that cottage look you want.

Also, a bunch of us Mid-Atlantic gardeners hold a plant swap twice a year, and there is one coming up in a few months that you might like to come to for ideas and advice from alot of knowledgable gardeners in this general area.
Look in the Mid Adlantic gardening forum and read about the swaps we have. You don't even have to swap.. we give them away.

Do you have pictures? You might be being too hard on yourself. You can get a good grounding in basics by buying your own copy of The Well-Tended Perennial Garden by Tracy Desabato-Aust. Figure out the light and soil conditions in your garden and then work the design with what you have. Your hostas are crispy because your gardens are dry and/or there's too much sun where they are. Brugs are best as pot plants. Echinacea and Monardia will take over your beds if your'e not careful, but they are easy and love sun.

Soil & light first. Design second, care and maintenance ongoing.

Sherrie, LOL! (That was a yell!) Florida definitely has a whammy against itself, with all the development plugging the "pores" that might allow some replenishment of ground water. If there were ways to just pump runoff into the sinkholes with some temporary hoses and pipes, that would be a step in the right direction. I have relatives in Florida who told us - years ago, before the last time they had drought - that someone had estimated that Florida needed the equivalent rain output of NINE hurricanes to get the groundwater back to "normal." (I would not wish one hurricane on anyone. But it sounds like you've had even worse than that, just not as much wind and tide damage.) Anyway, good luck with a drying-out soon Sherrie, and here is a safe bet: someday everyone will be paying lots more for water than for oil or gas, and we'll all be yelling alot more, pipes or no pipes.

The reasons for not feeding are as above but are even more complicated short term too - While you don't want to change their behavior, you also need to know that deer digestion involves bacteria that help break down food. Different micro-organisms help digest different types of vegetation. If you introduce a food to them that is different than their normal browse, their stomach may not have enough micro-organisms to digest the food. (bread?) If a doe has a fawn hidden away, she could gobble up something new that appeals to her and feel full, then not digest enough nutrients to produce good milk for her fawn to become strong. How about a pair of good but lightweight binoculars so mom and dad can enjoy watching them in the field of clover?

fallingwaters; first of all, know that your you and your dh, and his hea lth care prov iders are in my prayers. Your priorities are in the right place, although I know there is some disappointment after getting so much in place for the renovation. I, too, put off my kitchen for a year. My MIL fractured her hip and was having repeated complications, my husbands workload increased at work and by being the primary healthcare surrogate for his mom. I sensed that just having the stress of ripping out the kitchen -- but also of not HAVING a functional kitchen, was a bit more than our family could deal with. My kitchen is a place of respite, even if in it's current state it isn't perfect. My experience has been like needssometips and jreuter. I saved up some more $$. I'm not putting that extra into the kitchen, but it is giving us a bit more of a cushion. 2. I've gotten just about every wee decision made, down to the gar bage di sposal, and what I'm lining the drawers with. Except for the darn faucet. Still trying to figure it out. In the next few months as you go thru this with your husband, there will likely be times when you feel out of control. Looking at pulls and such and making a few decisions unrelated to the health aspects may help you get a feeling of control back. And in the middle of the night, when you can't sleep, no doubt someone has posted a tittilating post (I know that isn't spelled right) that may take your mind off the stressors for a few minutes.

How about an honest-to-goodness real one? I was visiting my back-door neighbors a couple days and we were talking about how forgetful we are all getting. The wife told me the husband answered the phone one day recently and talked for a few minutes, thanked the caller and hung up. Then he told the wife they had been invited to dinner the next evening. She asked who it was. He couldn't remember, but said they live in the end house. We have several "end houses" here. Imagine fixing dinner for someone who doesn't show up, or call. No Cynthia, I'm really being honest. I've read and poured over lots of books (not the one you mentioned though) and although I do know the theory it's difficult for me to implement it when I'm out there with a spade in hand.
Your garden is just beautiful! It is EXACTLY the look I would love, but I believe it just looks casual and in fact is put together very carefully. (Read that in one of those books!) It must be a joy to live with a garden like that! I will try to post some pics. when I find out how. Thanks for the input.

Look around when you're driving around and see what works for others (e.g., neighbors, commercial, etc.) You could also try going to some of the nearby gardens (National Arboretum (sp?), Brookeside, etc.). Lastly, most catalogs have predesigned gardens. You don't have to buy from them, but you would have a design ready to go.

I'm not a total dud gardener, and I can actually grow stuff that other people find difficult (not clematis or forget-me-nots though!) I love starting things from seed. It's the arrangement of plants together in a pleasing fashion that is so frustrating.
I may try the suggestion above from avoirgold to follow a predesigned scheme, but when I look at gardens like Cynthia's I couldn't even begin to break down the different elements that were woven together to create the overall composition.

Cynthia, did you make those beds from scratch?
