Boy, I'm tired!

And, if you don't feel like putting-up with me telling you so, just give me a break and find something else to read. I'm just venting and appreciate those of you who can tolerate or overlook a little of that.

Apparently, this won't be a year with an early frost so the warm-season veggies are still going gang-busters. Plantings of cool-season greens will be back in about a week so without a major cool down - we'll be harvesting, processing, and marketing both . . .

I've had 2 days off this Summer - both came because of rain on a Sunday (nice - relaxing time with family :o). Usually it is my day for spraying and I only missed those 2. Clear skies and warm temperatures - hasn't been the bumper year of '98 but there's been plenty of production.

Yeah, I've been doing this marketing scene since '93 and after a lifetime in agriculture, I knew pretty much knew what I was getting into. Haven't had the boat out in 14 years and consider myself too old for ice fishing. My hands are a mess and my back is wrecked.

We came home from the market yesterday and I fell asleep before 6PM. Other than driving a cat out of the garbage sometime in the middle of the night and spending a couple hours dozing in front of the TV after that . . . guess I spent 10 hours in a semi-coma. That is a darn sight better than getting about one-half or less of that in sleep most nights lately.

Didn't even fully unload the truck until this morning. Next marketday, I'll be lucky to just haul my sorry self off the marketsite at the end of the day . . .

It starts so slow in May and June . . . I guess, I wish things could get spread out a little more but the resentment might just have longer to build . . .

Early crops are followed by 2nd plantings of late ones. Full season crop ground results in this long-term battle to stop the weeds from flowering. Perennials give me a chance to work out there in the worse weather trying to resurrect the plants in the autumn or late winter.

November is the bestest month of the year!! I can find a few days when I won't even leave the house. Preparing food for Thanksgiving is like trying to rebuild the strength of a convalescent . . . Oh, and then there's December . . .

Hang in there! The killing frost are coming! I hit the wall the end of August with too much stress at work and not enough sleep and Fair! I finally had to say it isn't going to get done and not worry about it. My production was down by half this past week. But there is still apples, pears, plums and all the usual this week to deal with.

I go through the same thing about this time of year then in November I'm walking the field looking at the lingering greens and Brussels sprouts and wishing for another month.

Hope this thread ain't getting too old to respond to. Luv the silliness of the English language. Keep in mind almost anything goes...eventually. People start misusing words, then those words enter the vernacular, and finally become accepted as correct. One notable exception, however, is the word I used in the first sentence--ain't. It's been around a hell of a long time, but has never achieved "accepted" status. No idea why. Anyhow, more handsome or handsomer are definitely both acceptable in speaking--less certain of the written word. I agree with Orrin--handsomer seems odd, even though it's "correct". It's like the usual response to "Who's there?" is usually "Me" or "It's me" rather than "It is I". Yet I is correct in this place. That & which drive me nuts, although people tend to use "that" in sentences where it's not really necessary. For example, the following sentence: "It seems possible 'that' we could do something about the problem" could just as easily be written "It seems possible we could do something about the problem". The first sentence means the same as the second, but with four more letters and a space in it--more typing needed to convey no additional information. Rob P.S. Hotter is good. I also like hunkier. P.P.S. I vote for rookie.

I underestimated how many berries were on the plants. They double in size when they ripen. I think we will end up with more than 15 pounds harvested before the last variety even starts. I have one plant that was mislabeled and I planted it in a row with another variety. I am planning to move it in the late fall. Their rootballs are so shallow and relatively small that I think it can be done safely if done carefully. One other note, the plants I put thick pecan shell mulch around have outgrown the others easily. If you have only a few plants and are willing to spend a little extra $$, pick up a bag or two per plant of pecan shells and put it 4 inches deep. Make sure the soil underneath is acidic to start with also.

I have antique ironstone, antique hutches and English/Irish pine tables found at fleamarkets and antique stores, as well as many CL finds that I've refinished/reupholstered. They're all mixed in with newer PB and RH pieces and Hubbardton Forge lighting that may be considered trendy but aren't to me because they suit my style. DD's changing table was an early American drysink that I loved but unfortunately no longer have a home for, so it was given to a family member to use in her new baby's nursery. An antique dresser that DH modified with a copper vessel sink is now a vanity in my powder room. My favorite piece of furniture is DD's antique iron bed from the 1800's, which is exactly what I would have loved to have had as a child. My second fav piece is my RH reclaimed pine dining table. I'll probably keep most of the items in my home as long as they last. Not making any effort to be unique - I try to buy only what I love. Rarely does anything leave my house after it comes in! My sister is the opposite - she gets bored with her furniture after a few years so she isn't as inclined to spend the effort refinishing furniture or spending extra on quality hardware. She has a beautiful home!

Janefan, I am the mother of twins, too. I never forget how hard my twin pregnancy was, but I do adore my girls (4.5) despite how hard it was, so maybe there is hope that I will love my kitchen, too!!! Bellamy, I only wish that I hired a cheap GC, so at least I wouldn't be paying a fortune for every aspect of this kitchen, but it is not the case. We hired the GC used by very close friends, friends who are incredibly demanding and exacting (husband's friend from the military), who did a very large addition to their house. They could not have praised this GC more. We saw his work in person, while it was in progress, work that was done exactly on schedule, perfectly. He was the most expensive GC of all that we interviewed, but we hired him because we were willing to pay more to have a job done on time and well, and because we trusted our friends' judgment. Sometimes you can do all the due diligence in the world, and things just don't work out the way you expect. If you read my post you will see that I never said that the KD is wrong to wait, and I didn't ask him not to wait, just frustrated, mostly with the being given false expectations, and with the carpenter, who obviously has too many jobs. I do see lots of people on this board with appliances installed before the rest of the kitchen is 100% done, and I do think the KD is being overcautious to protect his butt at our expense, but I have let him run the job the way he wants in that respect. I have done a renovation before, knew it would be long and frustrating, girded myself for the length and frustration, and believe that we have been actually quite patient. Too patient in the beginning. Just wanted to vent my frustration a little. Sorry it irritated you, Bellamy.

Thanks for the commiseration . . . One issue right now is that the weather is deteriorating with cold wind. Margaret, you may be experiencing that on the other side of the hill. Production has just peaked and the slide hasn't become obvious.

I know if there are more weeks of warmth and sunshine (& there will be :o) I'll be walking around just like Robin looking for something to to get it down to the market - for as long & as often as the Autumn weather is pleasant.

Don't complain I am still cutting bushels of okra and tomatoes . And am just starting to plant greens because until a few day ago it was in the 90's every day and DRY DRY DRY . We haved a we had the remnants of a hurricane and now it is in the 70- low 80 and 50's and 60's at night . We are now preparing for garlic planting. I will be going to farmers market until at least Christmas. Then there is a couple months off before we start Inoculating mushroom logs and staring seedlings.

I hear you! Before we got our 10 acres, suburban gardening season was much shorter. Now, with property, it seems there is always more to do than I can keep up with. Besides gardens, which I have always done, I now have a blueberry patch and a new orchard + the mowing, wood splitting and other chores. Sometimes I am so busy with gardens and market that I barely have time or energy to preserve my own harvest! I really could use all the labor saving tips I can find. I can usually keep up with weeding until Blueberry harvest in July but once harvesting begins, I lose the war on weeds. This year, my garden ended early, and I just didn't have the energy to keep up with the bugs and weeds, so I just let the rest of it go. Fall becomes my favorite time of year -- when I can finally relax -- that is after tilling things under, planting garlic, chopping wood, mowing and sucking up leaves for mulch etc etc... By January I am usually getting ready to start seeds and begin the whole process over again.

I start selling plants on ebay and mail order in February, and March--then April it starts here. The farmers market starts here in May, with plants and rhubarbs green onions, etc first. Then morphing into tomatoes and okra, and more plants. Tropicals and water gardening plants all summer. Then veggies veggies, veggies, and perennial plants until fall, then it's mums and pumpkins, and house plants. Then after that I used to rest, but not since I found Christmas wreaths and grave blankets. Now I get one month off (relatively speaking since I'm always cutting dead foliage off the perennials in the greenhouse that we're overwintering, and repotting things, and watering in the heated greenhouse so those plants stay looking good for cuttings for spring sales. In January, I get to start seeds and then I'm hopping again! I'm tired too.
Gotta go, someone's in the driveway!
