I have similar looking plants in my garden but I have no idea of the name. I think they're pretty common though, I'm sure any good garden center has them. But isn't it possible that they are staying small because they're in a pot?

Welcome Jen, 'somewhat obsessed' is a fine quality when it comes to dahlias. Your plant sounds healthy and all I can think to offer is that there are plenty of dahlias that have smaller blooms, and perhaps weaker stems that would tend to face the ground. I had a small-flowered pink drooper whose many flowers would splay all over despite healthy foliage. It was just the nature of that particular variety. It looked like a mum after a rainstorm much of the time. There are a few darker/reddish foliage (bronze foliage is the term, I think) dahlias. Yes, I have been gardening more years than I will admit to, Babka! And we are both right. A garden is non-stop change, some you choose and some find you, like the herd of deer I battle. But there are some plants that genuinely are "plant and forget". I have many hostas that fit that description. They are such monsters to move or divide that I try to plant them in a permanent home. Of course, I fertilize, water, mulch as needed but they are virtually carefree for me, knock on wood. I also have astilbes, maidenhair ferns, balloon flowers and some others that have been in the same place with no dividing etc. for 25 years plus. Admittedly, most of my perennials want a lot more attention than that so I love the "plant and forget" (except for admiring them) all the more. And Caliloo, that Baby Blue Eyes is really appealing. I may have to try more than one of these but Blue Mouse Ears seems to have the vote.

I have over 350 hostas in my St. Louis garden. and very rarely loose any hostas. However, I lost five plants this year, several of which were plants I have had for over ten years. What happened. Well, I made a few mistakes. The spring of 2012. The spring started in February in St. Louis. For some reason, I decided to buy mulch in early March and I applied it uniformily over my garden. My plants struggled in some cases to get through the mulch layer and in other cases, the mulch created a great environment for voles. I had vole tunnels everywhere in some gardens! I know the voles contributed to loss of vigor. The heat and lack of rain. I couldn't keep up with watering and was forced to 'retreat' in July. I focused my watering to certain gardens and saw early senescence in other gardens. The net-net is I lost some plants and in other cases, saw loss of size by approximately 50%, perhaps even 70% in some cases. Not sure one can do much about the heat and lack of rain. And I only used compost this year instead of mulch.
