Air pillows as fillers in pots...will it work?

I have several large pots to put some large hostas in. I would like to use air pillows, the kind they use as packing material, as fillers to take up some room, thereby using less soil in the pot. Have you done this? If so, how did it turn out? How long do the roots on, say, Komodo Dragon get? The pot for this one is probably 24" tall at least. I am planning on putting the pillows around the outer perimeter of the pot, and filling the center with soil, placing the crown on a "teepee" of sorts; a mound of soil right in the middle of the pot. Then I will place more soil around the roots so that it "sandwiches" them. Whaddya think??????????
