Home-made deer repellant

I've tried a few variations of the basic recipe for deer repellant posted by forum members. I think they have all called for a small amount of salad oil. Is that ingredient absolutely necessary? I think it is dissolving the wax on my blue hostas. The morning after I spray a fine mist of the smelly stuff I can see tons of tiny spots where the stuff hit the leaves. The wax appears to be gone. It doesn't bother the yellow or green hostas, or varigated ones with no blue.

Or is it some other ingredient?

The flowers on my impatiens also suffer the same problem. They get tiny white spots where the spray hits.
