Just about any tree is going to get too large for that spot. You could probably fit in an orchard apple on a dwarfing rootstock, but nothing else much. And most certainly not a Kanzan cherry or either of those pears, they'd get far too large. Resin

Almost all scientific studies have shown that amending the soil is generally not a good idea (even for sandy soil)! If you feel you must amend the soil, use very little amendment and mostly original soil. You will find numerous posts on gardenweb as well as other forums advising against soil amendment, in general, when it comes to planting trees. I disagree about the shadetrees not working in the front yard. I MIGHT consider smaller trees in that area, but it appears that you have much more room from such trees in your yard than many gardeners. I think most people enjoy larger trees if they have room for them (which you appear to have). Shadetrees can also cut down on energy costs by keeping your house much cooler in summer monthes. Basically, this will have to be determined by your personal tastes. Don't give up on trees if the ones from the National Arbor Day Foundation aren't what you expect. There have been a number of previous posts from people disappointed in their trees (or small sticks) from this organization. Sometimes people get lucky though and get small but decent trees. In the future, Garden Watchdog is a good resource to investigate whether a plant source seems to have a good reputation. I always try to look nurseries up there before placing an order. There are a lot of great ideas here! If I'm serving the soup/sauce that day, I usually just use a large stainless spoon but you lose too much of the broth/sauce that way--not just the fat. I've considered the fat separator but haven't bought one. I really like the All Clad spoon--I may pick up one of those. I think I would use it enough to make the price worth it. I also love the freezer bag trick and the ice bath for a quick cool down.

It may take several years before any tree will be able to provide adequate shade. The closer you place the tree to the patio, the better, however there is the risk of roots under the patio, and in the case of oaks - nuts hitting you on the head! I am not familiar with trees that grow in Houston - sorry - so I will not offer alternatives. Depending how much time you spend outside on the patio, maybe a pergola roof structure or canvas triangular coverings would be worth the expense. Finally - speak with someone at you local nursery for tree suggestions - Here in Pa. I would never plant bamboo - it is too invasive.
