dying hostas

1. I have a moderate sized hosta garden under two large trees. For years they did fairly well. However this year about half of them didn't come up. Should I keep watering them? Does this mean they have died?

2. Due to drought in this area, the leaves of some of the hostas that did come up have dried up. Does this mean they have died? Should I keep watering them?

Extended drought from previous years can cause hostas to eventually die out, and tree root invasion can be the main cause for this eventual decline. While watering really, really good might help to keep them fighting a little longer you will want to get to the "root" of the problem, and your best odds will be to move them somewhere better.

The other problem can be with rodent damage over the winter, and if that's the reason for them not coming up they are gone.

I'd start digging up a couple of the ones that were still living and see if you have tree root problems. If so I'd soak them in water to help give them the water that they need so badly but has been stolen by tree roots, then find a new home for them.

I have one spot that was doing this, so I dug out a couple trees that were the biggest problems (luckily I have a loader to do this, and am happy for the winter firewood) then I amended, rototilled and replanted everything. I might have to lift that area again in 3 or 4 years since there are other trees nearby that will find this spot too.

i will bet that shiny penny on maple trees ...

water.. water.. water..

those that havent come up yet.. gone.. dead..

those that have gone SUMMER DORMANT.. lack of water ... which might mean tree roots are taking any water you THINK you are giving them ...

Hmmmmm... Getting rid of: Liriope muscari; they were controllable early on, but geez, did they spread! Too many unmanagable clumps lining the bed in the front of the house (maybe 10). I removed 3 last year and replaced with salvias. Much better ;) Rose of Sharon (lilac/red throat); really don't like it, never did, but I can't throw anything out. Will relocate to work ;) Already purchased a Hibiscus coccinea to replace it; yippee! Wants?: I'm getting into red. I never liked red flowers, but since I'm getting more hummers each year (well, this will be my third year), I want to keep them happy. I've already moved alot of my plants around, last year, and moved other hummer favorites in. I'm already trying to figure out what else I need to move and what else I can fit in! I think my veggie garden may soon be a thing of the past; it's right next to my hummer area, so it's taking up some valuable real estate! I want my Monarda "Jacob Cline" to become invasive! I also wish I had some better areas for vines. I purchased a Coral Honeysuckle, but I don't know where I can possibly put it, that it'll thrive and climb.

Don't know what to tell you,alchemyst. I have red clay here in NC,and all my hostas grow very well in it. Maybe you planted them too deep? This time of year,(if that's when you planted them),they should be dormant. If that's the case,they will come up next spring. All my hostas have been dormant since October,and won't return till'next spring. Phil

Many of my hosta's do not look that vibrant. I understand your advice but these plants were originally in the ground, which had really dense roots (hard to even get a shovel to dig in). I dug all that out, amended the soil and planted my hosta. I did this again a few years later when the roots took over again. The third time, I said, enough. That's when I got the containers, the weed block and good soil to try to keep the roots from taking over again. When I pulled out one of the pots this weekend, the roots had made their way into the containers. The oak (200 years old) died last year was about 15-18 ft away. The line of maples along property line are only 7-10 ft away. They are not huge maples but about 15-19" in diameter. Pretty frustrating on a plant that is usually so easy to grow.

I am sorry to read about your huge loss! We also had a lot of snow for longer time than usual. 1. I could think about rot due to standing water and repeated freezing and thawing as the snow cover melted. I lost several hostas that way. Is that area flat with the crowns at soil level? Water could pool there. 2. Perhaps you had a lot of hungry voles. I had voles eating dwarf conifer bark under a higher than usual snow cover here. Branches are still dying. That area is not where I have my hostas. Such eating of bark I have never seen in the 28 years I garden here. Voles love hostas.

Those under or within 20 feet of my maple trees are really subject to root invasion... I've had to dig several up and clear several planting areas of tree roots this year... cultivating soil and digging out lots and lots of choking fiberous roots... at first your hostas seem to slow down.. then they start getting smaller... the key is to broadcast water the entire area and then some... that way the tree roots don't grow entirely towards the water in your beds... a trick I've learned is to water the ground heavier on the other side of the tree opposite your hostas... if I had enough shade left when I cut them down I would... hopefully by the time I die I will see all the water maples gone... I have sugar maples as well and they aren't nearly as invasive...

I have had beautiful back yard woodland garden with huge hostas in there. Over the years I noticed that the huge ones came up small sometimes and then died. i have pine trees and bald cypress so dont know if that is the cause? I spent lots of money on special hostas and they looked gorgeous for maybe 3 years and then they are gone..ALso I have some yellow nancy lamieum that I need to choke out..It covered the hostas sometimes> can this type of groundcover kill them
