Do I have a Japanese / Vine Maple cross seedling?

I have a large, 25+ year old red Japanese Maple and a equal size Vine maple in opposite sides of my yard that both reseed often. This spring under the Vine maple I found a seedling that had red leaves and looks like a cross between the two. Is it possible that they have crossed? Will it make a good tree do you think?

Have not heard of one, but they are related. Be sure to keep it going, in case your suspicions are true.

Thanks for answering, Ron B., I figured if anyone would know it would be you. I will definitely take care of it. I'm not sure if it would be much of an improvement on either tree. As far as I can tell they both have the same hardiness and growing requirements. The red in the leaves has faded to mostly green by mid summer just like the old Japanese maple I have. Are vine maples susceptible to all the same diseases as Japanese maples? If they aren't that could be a possible improvement.

Hi Trish. If you had Japanese Maple seedlings this spring, you should have them again next spring I would think. I have both purple Japanese Iris and Japanese Rooftop Iris (cristata) to trade. hey Trish, I would love to have some of your Jap Maple seedlings. The only plants I have to trade right now are some cherry seedlings. These are fast growers and have large crops of dark red cherries on long stems. The "momma" tree was a gift to my dad many years ago so we don't know what kind it is but the cherries are very sweet and beautiful and they make great pies or just eating fresh. I do have some pink peonies, but it will be on into the summer before we well be dividing these. LMK what you think or if you'll be willing to trade for postage. Thanks so much, Joel.

I have a new crop of Japanese maple seedlings coming up. I want to start digging them up but have too many to replant. These are small, about 2-3 inches high, first set of true leaves...no names....and can send a dozen at a time at least. I would like to trade these first and I do like the color pink. Vine maples can sometimes become diseased, of course, but Japanese maples are really having a problem these days. The probability of planting one and having it soon commence to die back and dwindle away seems to have become quite high.
