Do I have a Japanese / Vine Maple cross seedling?

I have a large, 25+ year old red Japanese Maple and a equal size Vine maple in opposite sides of my yard that both reseed often. This spring under the Vine maple I found a seedling that had red leaves and looks like a cross between the two. Is it possible that they have crossed? Will it make a good tree do you think?

Have not heard of one, but they are related. Be sure to keep it going, in case your suspicions are true.

Thanks for answering, Ron B., I figured if anyone would know it would be you. I will definitely take care of it. I'm not sure if it would be much of an improvement on either tree. As far as I can tell they both have the same hardiness and growing requirements. The red in the leaves has faded to mostly green by mid summer just like the old Japanese maple I have. Are vine maples susceptible to all the same diseases as Japanese maples? If they aren't that could be a possible improvement.

Hello, I have some basil I started growing inside in December. It didn't germinate until march, and now the sprouts are still only 2" tall, bonsai basil, I guess. I could send you some and maybe you'll have better luck than me, I just won't be able to get it out until late next week at the earliest. Would love to have as many of your Japanese Maple seedlings as you can send. I have not yet got this years trade list up. I have the common orange daylily both single and double and also a pretty yellow named variety but I lost the tag. I have 3 or 4 kinds of historic iris and plain yellow daffodils. I have some rooted five-leaf Akebia (chocolate vine). Lots of Catnip plants, peppermint and I think spearmint. Also the eastern Wild Columbine and Confederate Violets. Anything interest you? Hi, Trish! I have been DYING to get my hands on some Japanese Maple. I don't have a ton to trade, as I'm a relative newbie, but I'd be willing to do a SASBE trade, or purchase some from you. I do have seeds to trade, if you're interested in those at all (jalapeno, green bell pepper, black beauty eggplant, asian cabbage, baby leaf spinach, and pepperoncini). Vine maples can sometimes become diseased, of course, but Japanese maples are really having a problem these days. The probability of planting one and having it soon commence to die back and dwindle away seems to have become quite high.
