I am wanting to add more plants to a shade garden and want to know about Cimicifuga Racemosa (bugbane), where I can get it, and how well it grows here in MN., I live in the nothern suburbs.

I have it. I love it! I put in two more of them last summer, and have collected quite a bit of seed from my other one. Grows great in my shade garden, the flowers smell wonderful!

I'd be happy to share some seed with you.

Its a good one. It has a great fragrance and does very well in deep shade (north side of house). It also provides seeds. I just let mine self-sow and move the seedlings when I find them in spring. I'm sure you can get it in Minnesota somewhere, but if you can't, the Winter Greenhouse in Winter, Wisconsin has several varieties. (as well as many other perennials, wildflowers and shrubs, and lovely demonstration gardens) They don't mail order, but it is only a few hours drive for you. Winter is near Hayward, Wisconsin.

Woody, look at those blooms, lovely. I have 'Brunette' but have to move it as it seems to be going downhill where it is, no blooms this year :(. Is yours scented, Brunette has a lovely scent, we actually bought it after following our noses around a corner at a nursery we were visiting on the mainland, there it was a huge clump growing in their display border. I should be so lucky. Another here who hates it when they change a name, it's hard enough for me to remember the name it used to be especially when I go to look something up and I can't find it. Then, it's back to thumbing through, looking at all the pictures (insert grumble, grumble here). Annette

I tried but failed. It seems to want to be continually moist but needs a good organic mix void of red clay.

I know it has been awhile since you asked, but Bugbane really thrives in shade (even full shade). It sounds like the four hours of early morning sun would be perfect. The most important thing is consistently moist soil, though. If it dries out, the leaves will brown and curl.

I ordered Cimicifuga Rasmosa from a nursery in Maine!! Couldn't find it anywhere locally. Received about five rootlings in the spring and planted them in two spots near our creek (but not right besdie it) in partial shade. I was careful to water it often and though I had read that it takes a few years to establish and begin to bloom, I got one very tall, stately and elegant bloom on one of the plants last year that gets more morning than afternoon sun. I am still trying to baby it along and keep it moist iin dry periods and mulch it well but I love it and hope it stays happy. If I have more blooms this summer, I will take photos and post them.

I too have a Cimi "brunette" in my yard- and do enjoy it very much! I have not had seeds germinate sucessfully though- I find division a great way to propagate-
You may have more luck if you search for 'actaea' as the name cimicafuga has recently been reclassified (name changed) to Actaea-
I am hoping to find a few more- Hillside black beauty- Pink spike, and realy, any others. I am wintersowing seeds of a couple right now- I hope I have better luck with germination this year than last year....
I have my plant in almost total shade but I fear it is too dry for it there- it does not grow as well as others elsewhere have. This family of plants will do very well in full sun too, if it's roots stay moist! I am sure you will enjoy this selection!

I have Hillside Beauty, Brunette, Racemosa and the new pink one. Love them all but Hillside Beauty is one of my very favorite perennial plants. The foliage is very dark the whole season and in August it sends up five foot spikes of white flowers. The contrast of the dark foliage and the white spikes is absolutely gorgeous!! Sounds like you have a great offer of some seed. If you want plants, I bought one last year at Rice Creek Gardens in Blaine.
