If a blue-green leaf and small/medium size - Blue Cadet is a possibility. In my zone 4 - lots of scapes getting ready.

Fortunei Hyacinthina is starting to bloom for me in zone 5.

Ventricosa has green shiny leaves and very dark purple striated flowers. Mine is starting to bloom now in southeastern PA. Gail

Ventricosa must be what I have. It is an older plant bought in the early l990s, tag long gone. Lots of deep purple blooms with shiny foliage, pretty.

I just looked at my two hostas that are blooming deep purple, one I am pretty sure is ventricosa, the other is bigger and might be hyacinthia. I think that's what I'm going to label them, lol! If anybody visiting my garden wants to tell me different, they'll get no argument from me!

Definitely Ventricosa! It's the only one I have ever seen with purple blossoms,and mine,too is blooming now. Phil

There are thousands of named hostas. Please post a photo, and tell how long you have had it, and where it came from, if you know.

There are some sites that break things down regarding size and color, but mostly that only refers to the ones they are selling. Don R has many, many lists too, but the fastest way to ID a plant is here on the forum, because somebody is probably growing that one and will recognize it.

I'm thinking it might be ventricosa. I have another, just a shade lighter one, that isn't blooming yet--it might be fortunei hyacinthina. This one, by far, has the darkest blooms of any hosta I have. I need to label even these common ones, because I just don't know what they are!

I can't tell you the age, because these have been here since we bought our house 5 years ago. I've divided and moved them all over the place, and they just keep going and going. Now that I've begun collecting named hostas, they will probably be banished to the outer reaches of the yard, but I do still like them.

Ventricosa. Another characteristic is the wavy edge which you see on some of the leaves. Freely self-seeding.
