If you only ordered your plants a month ago and one is possibly dead, I would pick up the phone and call Jim's Hostas to see if they would give you a replacement. It can hardly benefit their business to be panned in a popular hosta forum. I asked them to please send me nice specimens because it was my friend's introduction to hostas altogether. I got several hostas from them a couple years ago. Not the most giant of specimens, but they were OK. They sent me a bonus hosta called "Yellow Eyes", which I never really liked, and when it died, I didn't cry.

I do not think Hostas Direct is worth the wait. They are local to me and I've been to a sale at the owner's house. For their TC's, you're going to receive very small plugs.... like from a 1" x 1" cell. The ones I bought 4 years ago are still not very large. For their "mature divisions" you're probably going to receive a single-eyed plant. My suggestion: Cancel the order and order from Hallson's or Naylor Creek. BTW: Here in MN, the mature plants only really unfurled about a week or two ago. And Hostas Direct is a bit north of me, but closer to the cities. Sorry to often show discontent with Hostas Direct, but I haven't been back since 2007 and won't go back. The plants are just too small for the money. I probably lost 1/3 of what I'd purchased.

when you spend money on hosta.. what you are buying is POTENTIAL ... basically a root mass ... if you pay 5 bucks [just throwing some numbers out].. for a TINY TC plug.. you will spend the time waiting for it to grow the root mass.. to finally grow to some size .. but you can pay 8 bucks.. and let someone else spend the two years.. losing half of them.. and growing them on .. etc ... is the 3 bucks really worth.. messing with a tiny babe for 2 or 3 years.. just so you can add a few more names to your list of names.. i say NOT .. pay a little extra.. and buy the faster potential .. ken

Back home now. Sorry that I didn't see all of these messages before I left. Idiothe - 800?? That would have been something to see : ) I just decided to start collecting this year and decided that I'd buy 25 this year and 25 next year - 'cause 50 hostas ought to be enough for anyone, right? Ha! (Am I the only one that makes note of one I "need" whenever Paul posts a picture? I guess this is how it starts...) teresa mn - Not sure if I'll get that way again before Fall, but it's good to know that there are other resources out there! By the way, I did make it to Venero Gardens and was quite taken with it. Very charming and I definitely got a lot of bang for my buck. Two of the hosta I selected were HUGE. Sun Power is about 20 inches tall and Alex Summers about 24 inches tall! That's a lot of instant gratification for someone like me who's just starting out.
