If you are going to have a greenhouse that you need to use in colder temps, please think about installing a simple geothermal system (dig down into the ground, insert some plastic tubing that will vent into the greenhouse) and let the temperature of the earth maintain stasis inside. You can also put any large water containers around the outside or in the center of the inside, painted black to collect more heat during the day. Extending and improving the function of your greenhouses will become a necessity in the coming years. Google "geothermal heat for greenhouses" - you'll get a zillion hits. While you're at it, Google "permaculture". You'll need that knowledge for the future as well. When this country reaches 9 billion population (we are at 7.5 now), we will top out our ability to feed everyone. You should know how to grow your own and hopefully have some left over for others.

There are small pop-up and plastic-covered portable greenhouses that sell for $25-200 or so, but it's difficult to build any real greenhouse for less than $300-500. Heating of greenhouses or hoophouses may be active or passive, using lights, thermal mass, heaters, and/or thermostats for temperature control--there are many options depending on your needs and budget. Remote thermometers from Oregon Scientific or other manufacturers are useful for keeping tabs on your temperatures to avoid chilling or overheating in the greenhouse or hoophouse, and internal temperatures may be cross-referenced against other outdoor readings to check the efficacy of your insulation and heating methods.

I like the Jiffy 7's too. They always work well for me. For the average Joe who is not starting hundreds of plants these work extremely well in my opinion. Virtually no mess, no cleanup. I use the sprayer from the kitchen sink to fill the tray part way, go through my seed packs and decide which ones to grow, come back 5-10 minutes later and they are popped-up, ready to go. I learned the hard way, if it doesn't say JIFFY, it's not! By mistake, picked up another similarly packaged system a couple years ago, with horrible results. Don't recall the brand, think I got them at Walmart. Once the pellets were fluffed, they reminded me more of sawdust and less like starter mix. The germination rate was abysmal.
