Cleanig tools: what works?

I have read quite a variety of opinions when searching on line regarding how to clean tools used near HVX infected plants. Some say nothing really works 100%, and others say a simple bleach/water solution works. I have checked the agricultural extensions of a number of Universities in the midwest and am as confused as ever. In the meantime cleaning tools with the bleach, just as I have done with re-used pots, is my approach until someone tells me different.

most of us ... have duplicate tools ... more than one shovel ...

i just took some international orange spray paint [which i have around in lawn marking form ... for new bed design] .. and painted my lest favorite shovel orange ...

and ONLY USE that one on hosta with problems ...

chris told me.. that once dried... and aged ... the bad goo is basically inert ... just leave your shovel.. on the driveway in 100 degree heat for a week to so.. and you should be all set ...

the issue is usually reserved for those.. who for some unknown reason.. go from plant .. to plant.. to plant.. like chris might ..

i mean really how many hosta are most of us home gardeners digging up on a given day??? and if you have one with hvx.. why are you dividing it??? how many tools do you need on it???

i think chris uses some hospital grade lysol type product.. i will leave it to him to chime in .. if he has the 22 seconds to reply ... i mean really .... whats the use of checking ... lol ..

The last time I dug a hosta out with probably HVX I used a stainless steel spade which is welded where needed and has no crevices where the bad stuff could survive. I then let the spade sit in a Clorox solution for an hour, then brushed and rinsed it off.

I agree on the mechanical work gloves for delicate work if you must or need gloves. 1. Personally, I prefer no gloves to be honest and get a good feel and control unless they are needed. 2. Working firewood, I want some good leather in palms and finger areas but hard to find. 3. Home DepotÃ¯Â¿Â½s best are in the rental section and only go out with Roto rooters machines vs for sale. 4. I got the next best pair that will probably not last a year since the best gold ones did not (but saves splinter/bruises). Not the best or worst at the link below. These similar cheaper ones might last one or two jobs. I bought a sturdy plastic stool thats about 6 or 7" high that I sit on when I'm weeding in the garden or potting up plants. It's the perfect width and height and works great since I can't stay on my knees or stand in one place too long without my knees locking up. I have loose knee caps due to being born with my legs twisted outwards until it looked like my feet were backwards (had to where leg braces when I slept as a baby in order to fix them). My other favorite tool is my parents digging pitch. It was given to them by some family friends and is one of the really good quality ones. It takes a lot of force to bend one of it's tines unlike the ones they sell in the chain stores. I'm constantly borrowing the thing since it's great for loosening up the soil around a weed's roots without damaging tree roots or any nearby good plants.

You will need to specialized hand tools for some of the work---plumbing, electrical, and tiling. You can buy books on all of those subjects at Home Improvement stores, they teach you how to do the jobs right---saves the expense of having to redo them. Framing partition walls/ceiling and set door ( all windows installed. 1. 4' level(if that is what you call a framing level, disregard) 2. Framing nailer and compressor(there are several deals on kits---2 or 3 nailers+ compressor for around $300 or less) 3. Cordless drill---for using finish screws to install the doors instead of nails. Much easier for a beginner to get the door frames straight using screws. Install shower stand, commode and vanity cabinet /sink. Shower stand??? Is this the base? If so, best to have the plumber do this if you have never done it. 1. Level, cordless drill, and cabinet mounting screws. 2. Wrenches to connect plumbing to faucet and commode. Tile bathroom floor 1. Tile saw--a cheap one for about $80 or so from the HI store or rent a better one. 2. Cordless drill-installing backer board with screws. 3. Specialized hand tools---trowels, tile nippers, and spacers. Wiring, fixture finishing 1. Cordless drill---drilling holes in studs to run wiring. finishing trim and molding work 1. Miter saw 2. Finish nailer/compressor(see above deal) painting. 1. Use 1" diameter rollers and a good angled trim brush.

All tested methods of decontamination -- household
detergent (Dawn), 70% alcohol and 10% solution of
household bleach -- were effective in eliminating
infectivity of the virus. The decontamination process
included intense scrubbing and cleaning of tools,
hands, and pots to remove plant material, soil and sap.
Viral material was visibly dislodged. It is not enough
to simply dip tools in cleaning solution. Tools must
be scrubbed free of all dirt and debris.

Thanks all of you! Hey Ken, I don't know how old you are but my "oops"-events are coming more and more frequently. Like, "OOPS", that leaf looks kind of funky!(LOL). Do I put the plant and shovel in the burning pile or tie myself to a stake. I'd rather burn the shovel and tie into a steak. Which brings up the question: is burning an infected with HVX hosta an effective method of disposal?

Since we try to remain informational in this forum, if you recently moved down south don't ever - ever - try to burn magnolia leaves. It's a good alternative to the needle for Texas death row inmates. If it doesn't kill you, you may wish it did.
