Blue hosta recommendations

Hi all. This is my first post on this forum. I'm a conifer guy primarily and know little about hostas, but my wife loves hostas. For her birthday she would like a deep blue-colored hosta for the garden. We have looked at local garden centers with no luck. Everything we see is either green or green-yellow, but nothing blue at all.

Can anyone recommend blue hostas that grow well in zone 5 (Michigan)? Also, any good mail order sources for hostas?

Welcome Dave, to the forum. for medium size I like Halcyon, for a large one I like Blue Angel. Lot of blue hostas start to look green after a while ( as the season progresses ) most of them at the nursuries are pretty small when you buy them, and they look green. so it's sometimes tuff to pic one out on your own unless you know what it will look like as it gets older

i guess it depends where in MI ... lol ... seriously.. where are you???

if you have some money .. and want a nice conifer/hosta field trip.. track down tom schmid in jackson MI ... a bit pricey ... but size matters... no matter what she says.. lol ...

now.. what size hosta do you want...

small ... blue mouse ears.. see other post ..

medium .. any of the eric smith hosta... hadspen blue comes to mind ..

moving toward big ... deep blue sea ...

there are of course.. a million others ... give us a better idea of what 'type or size' and i am sure others will chime in

PS: and if you want to come adrian MI way ... try hidden lakes gardens.... for spectacular conifer and hosta gardens.. and if you come that far.. i am only 12 more mins away .... i MIGHT have a few things that you would like to look at ...

PPS: the blue is a wax coating.. which wears off as the season goes on .. especially if watered overhead ... so, much nursery stock can look all green due to the rough handling ....

you asked me.. pappy gave you the answer ... the potato like crown needs to be at soil level ... the little pips within one inch of the top of the soil ... if planted too deep ... as little as 2 inches ... the plant will waste too much energy trying to get above the soil.. many will fail if too deep... crown .. pip.. eye.. petiole... cordate ... lanceolate.. all terms of art ... may as well start learning them .. you have bought your first hosta.. addiction is not far behind ... so you may as well start learning the terms.. lol ... find the hosta library ... there used to be drawings and stuff to start you on your way toward knowledge ... BTW .. while you are there research HVX virus.. especially the pix of such .... there are some mass marketers that sell virused plants.. especially if the packaging refers to bulbs.. i would perhaps not trust them ... if your plants show any sign of such .... destroy them.. NO MATTER HOW COOL THEM LOOK .... if you do catch the hosta fever.. we can recommend many great mail order sellers ... good luck .. come back often ... ken PS: blue angel can get up to 4 feet high.. and 6 feet across ... but it will take 5 to 7 years .... plant it where you can leave it for that long ...

You should realize that Hostas are shade tolerant, not shade loving. That means that in deep shade all hostas will grow much more slowly and have smaller leaves than they otherwise would. But they will still grow. A green leafed variety that is upright growing would be something like Jade Cascade, Green Fountain or Fluted Fountain. As for a white margined hosta with an upright shape, the only one I can think of is Minuteman. Steve

Made up 2 sketchy diagrams. Any thoughts? [One goal is low maintainence. Sis is not one to spend a lot of time playing in the dirt.] The grey block is the landing and steps from one of her front doors. The other door is to the right of the right raised bed. The garage and driveway are on that side. The landing shown has 2 metal ... columns I guess would be the best word. The clematises indicated in the diagram would be trained to climb up them. This 2nd pic is very similar. There was an old decaying cement sidewalk running between the raised bed to the right of the steps and a shrub. We tore that out. I mentioned to my sis that instead of letting grass grow back, she might consider heavily mulching the area and then perhaps just have a few smaller plants in front of the raised beds.

Dave, welcome!

I have a lot of blue Hostas, but the very bluest by far is 'Skylight'.
Naylor Creek Nursery carries it.

With apologies to those who've seen these (more than once!)

Love Pat - very cupped and holds whatever falls in - like stuff from dogwood tree above, but very puckery and blue...

June - blue, plus, plus....

I love Deep Blue Sea. Get it from Hallsons....can't go wrong there. A smaller one is Hadspen Blue, a really nice deep blue. Chris even sends a bonus plant if you order a few.

oh.. if you make it to jackson... on 127 ... as noted.. may as well go 15 mins south to hallson ...

each fills a different niche .... price vs size ...

but i was trying to lure you with the conifers at toms ...

and within 30 min north of tom .. is gee tree farm... for more conifers.. and no hosta. ....

sounds like a road trip to heaven.. lol ..

Maybe--I could, also, swing by and see 'inlimbo', too---another awesome hosta arranger and

hey j, you are more than welcome to stop by anytime! ;-))

I am having a garden walk thingy next year, in July.....as not to conflict with any conventions, or the 4th holiday weekend.

That should give me time to pull some of the weeds around here that LOVED all the rain we have gotten this year.

To stay on topic, here's my Deep Blue Sea, also very blue for me here, and very cupped and corrugated. Pic is from 2007, and it's way bigger now, but the time of year isn't too great for a pic of a blue Hosta.

hey j - you are too kind - I got lucky with June and a couple of others after reading this site!

Sadly, I have a lot of rearranging to do to get those on the driveway PLANTED and inspiration has not struck.
