Stained Glass Hosta

This spring I had to move all my hostas to another area because the spot where I had them was to wet and cold for to long in spring. The spot I moved SG to had a lot more sun than before. After a month or so I noticed one of the leaves was turning white. I attributed that to too much sun and planned to move it after it was done flowering. Then I noticed that the leaf was half white and more or less transluscent. I'm hoping that was also from to much sun. Right now, after all the rain we've had and the overcast days, the leaf is slowly returning to normal. Was that change from to much sun or is there something else that would cause that? I still plan to move it to a more shady area and see if it does better. Marg

My Stained Glass did the same thing when the neighbor removed the big blue spruce that was on the lot line. SG pouted so, I had to move her for fear of losing her.

Pretty sunflowers. Cute little bee on the first one. Brenda, I am sure I will be ordering more daylilies next year, once I see what happens with my garden this year. never heard of planta Poseidon ... not even in the library.. but it is any type of multi petaled P ... well.. dont expect to ever see a flower in bloom ... skip it ... solberg website says: on the flower bracts as well as the 30+ petaled flowers of 'Venus'. .. well.. good for him.. in 20 years.. i think my venus made it to an open flower twice ... in those two decades ... DR is also a hard one to grow .. many P plants are subject to late frost/freezes ... here in MI ... though city peeps might escape that ... good luck about changing genetics for subtle leaf colors.. yes.. siting might make a difference... but lets get real.. you either like it.. or you dont.. just like your old boyfriend.. dont try to change him ... accept him or dump him ... ken

Thank you both for your thoughts. I wound up finding another Encore Amethyst and now have three of those along with a Kurume Pink Pearl azalea. ;) I just couldn't resist. lol I found a Stained Glass hosta locally and put it in the middle of the two trees and am still looking for a shrub like something. I've been reading about the different Cimifuga's and Sambucus - I like Hillside Black Beauty and Sambucus Nigra "Eva". I think it will be one of those two but haven't decided yet. I'm holding off on buying anything because I have to have three trees taken down this winter. One is going to really impact the shade situation so I'm waiting to see how much I have to move and if it will change the plantings much. I love ferns, posierosie. I have two Autumn ferns, one is out front, the other in back. Two ferns that were growing on their own in my back yard - I figured if they were tough enough to survive the drought on their own, they needed to be in a bed. Three japanese painted ferns, one Christmas fern, a lady fern and a red regal fern. So far I have more hostas than anything - stained glass, blue mammoth, abiqua drinking gourd, halycon, elegans, sun power, sum and substance, striptease, francee, blue mouse ears and lemon lime. I have seen so many I covet on the hosta forum it isn't funny. ;) I also have heuchera but am not sure I'm buying more of those. So far three have just disappeared and I don't like spending money on things that get smaller instead of bigger. My dad gave me 10 lenten roses last year too. I think two of them are big enough to bloom this year - the rest are still too little.

Yes, it is the sun... but that doesn't necessarily mean you need to move it to a shadier spot...

Stained Glass has been a slower grower for me than the original Fragrant Bouquet / Guacamole family. Still, it is a steady grower. It will tolerate full deep shade, but prefers bright light and can tolerate quite a bit of direct sun. My largest one grows in full direct midday sun.

In direct hot sun, SG does bleach out quite a bit in midsummer. Parts of mine are pretty white right now, while those in deep shade remain yellow.

But anytime you make a move like you did this year, you really can't tell too much from the first year. The plants seem to take a year to adjust to changed light conditions. Many hostas will burn up the first year when moved from darker to lighter areas... but then the next year the foliage emerges under the new light conditions and the plant may be perfectly happy in the new spot.

sounds like it was a result of the move

Thought I'd mention that my stained glass gets the hottest 3-4 hours of sun from about noon to 4 pm. Next to our driveway asphalt, too. It's beautiful. Late to come up each spring, but worth the wait. Right now, it's gotten beautifully golden, without signs of burning.

I am not as good at watering as many of the others here on the forum, so I'd say that Stained Glass can take some heat once its roots have taken hold after a move. When I move any plant into more intense light, I'll often shade it for a few weeks with an old screen that I prop up, or I set an outdoor chair above it to take the brunt of the sun. That helps greatly (in addition to the xtra water, of course).

Since you've already moved SG once this year, maybe you could give it lots of water now and leave it to see how it does next year...it's a knockout when it gets some sun!

STOP MOVING IT ...

you sunburned the leaves.. you took deep shaded leaves.. and threw them in sun.. does it really surprise you that they couldnt handle it .. think your pasty white winter skin.. on the first sunny day of spring.. ouch .... in other words.. you did NOT harden off the foliage to the higher amounts of sun ...

ALL fragrant hosta are from plantiginea... and plantiginea takes full sun ...

the more sun for a fragrant plant .. the more vigor.. the more flowers.. the faster it will grow ...

i will bet a shiny penny.. that the new flush is sun tolerant ...

it should be coming into bloom.. unless you have moved it too often..

enjoy the flowers.. and leave it there...

Thanks to everyone for the info. Mary, a good tip about the chair - good to know. I have only moved it once so far and will now leave it and see what it does next year. I just went out and checked and the color is coming back. Ken, thanks for the info re the fragrant hostas. I have to get a few more. thenks. Marg
