Japanese Maples in West Virginia(several pictures)

I usual post in the conifer forum, but I thought people would like to see these pictures here. I live on top of a small mountain in West Virginia.

The first is a pic of acer p ÂSeiryuÂ. I have two of these and the second is later. By far the best maple in my garden.

Next is an acer p ÂOtome zakuraÂ.

Acer p ÂUkigumoÂ and a ÂTamuke yamaÂ on the top of the boulders.

The maple in the center is acer p ÂSpring DelightÂ and the red tree is ÂRed DragonÂ. The top of this boulder is about 15 feet off the ground.

An acer p ÂFiligreeÂ.

This next is a ÂMikawa YatsubusaÂ experiment. There was huge crack in the boulder that I sealed up and planted the tree. So far (5 years) OK.

Another ÂSeiryuÂ. A great plant.

Another experiment, but by Mother nature. An acer p seedling in a crack on the side of a boulder.

Great pictures Gary! I love the rock plantings, and I'm very jealous of the Aureum. I don't have enough shade for an Aureum.

Did you get your plants from Eastwood Nurseries?

Beautiful maples and pictures. Seiryu is one of my top favourite trees. I wish there are other varieties of cutleaf maple.

hi you should water.. when it needs water.. which may or may not be once a week .. insert finger and water when the soil is dry ... lets not drown it at this time ... either frost/cold damage.. a week or two ago.. or chemicals from lawn spray ... it would be nice to see the whole tree.. to see if there is a pattern ... to answer the title ... no.. you have leaf damage.. that does NOT mean the tree itself is sick .... its sorta like a sunburn.. which does not mean you are sick .. just superficial tissue damage ... based on those pix at this moment in time ... and NO.. feeding it will not help ... ken

Thanks Jacqout and Muckmire, I checked out Vertrees from the library yesterday (they only had the 2nd ed., though) and found a photo, but it's just of the leaves. It's hard to find pictures of this tree. I've only seen the leaves! Found the tree at WorldPlants. Seems like a good price. I have to decide what I'm getting. I am considering several Maples--palmatums (less hardy, it seems, so maybe won't get) and japonicums. It has to be something small and hardy and not too bush-like. Christina

WEST virginia black dark mold on garden soil surface

I live in Central Virginia. This year we've had excessive amounts of rain and the mold, mushrooms and toadstools have really taken off. Also, some fungus in the lawn has also shown up. There are several approaches to controlling mold, but some black molds can really be tough to control. Some molds can be killed using an herbicide like 2-4-D - usually sold at the big box stores as lawn weed products. But you need to be careful not to allow runoff get into places you don't want killed. I find a pump sprayer works best. A mix of 50% Clorox bleach and 50% water will kill some molds, BUT DO NOT USE ON PLANTS. Finally, my go to fungicide for most garden mold and mildew problems is Daconil - available at the big box stores too. The fuzzy white stuff on your peppers sounds like it might be some form of mildew. If the Japanese Beetles haven't invaded your garden yet, they probably will. They started attacking my raspberries around the 4th of July. I use Sevin to control Japanese Beetles on my roses, raspberries and asparagus ferns. Hope this helps. Ed

Gary, beautiful pics! You seem like an expert on Seiryu! I just bought one the other day along with the shindeshojo and butterfly. They're all in morning sun with a bit of afternoon...I would say from 7a-130pm. Is this too much sun??? I didn't know if it was number of hours or intensity? Please help! I'm a newbie!

Yes, in the last seven years the majority of my maples have come from Eastwood. Since I live quite a distance from the nursery, all were sent to me. I actually wish I had more sun to grow conifers. The aureum is nice but not even in my top 5 in my garden.

jasmin, My advice comes from observations-not an expert at all. My Seiryus get several hours of sun and so you are ok in that regard. They grow in a fairly light soil that is sand/composted leaves/and a little clay which togeather drains very well. The kind of soil maples like. They also get alot of moisture by the way water drains from rain in my garden. I woud say they receive water equivalent to 60-80 in./year of rain. currently they are 10ft and 18ft in diameter after 17 years so they need room if given want they want. Good luck.

I am thinking of planting a Seiryu in my front yard bed next to the house. I have heard so many different things on this tree. Here is my dilemma. My house faces south (full sun all day) and I am looking for a Japanese Maple that will get to be 12-15 foot high and 8ft or so wide. I also want the tree to stay tree like form (not bushy). I was going to go with the Seiryu (based on other suggestions) but after looking at your pics I am worried this tree is much to big for a front yard landscape ? UGH !! Thoughts? Is this tree easily prunable for me to keep in tree form and not to big ? Thanks ! Great Pics !

You've done some nice things on that mountain top, Gary. Gotta love the 'Mikawa Yatsubusa' in the crevice...and for 5 years, no less. Thanks for taking the time to post these.

This is a 3+ year old post.....not sure OP is still around to appreciate kind comments :-)

cubbyboy, it is never a good idea to tack a new question on to the end of another post, especially one that is so old.......you may never get an answer to your question! Try posting a new message altogether.

To answer your question, if well-sited and given proper growing conditions, Seiryu will get much larger than the size you have specified......about double, in fact. I'm not sure what zone you are in but colder zones will limit the size these trees achieve. That, said, trees just keep growing, as long as they are alive.

Personally, I do not recommend pruning a Japanese maple to keep it to a size significantly smaller than it naturally wants to be - it destroys the growth habit and appearance. Do some more research to find a tree appropriate to your zone and size requirements.
