Lotsa Hosta - Now the BIG haul!

More new hostas - this time from Karla! It was about time I went to Karla's place, instead of just picking up a few from her on Ebay. These are BEAUTIES! I just hope I've got the names all correct on the pics. You know how it is when you get home with the big haul of new hostas, and you just gotta share them with somebody? You take the pics but don't take time to record what order you took them in because you're sure you'll remember. Then you bring all the pics in the house, download them to the PC, and try to get all the names right? And then, at 11 pm maybe midnight, you're going back outdoors and bringing in 2 or 3 pots at a time, trying to match them up with the pics that you're thinking you must not have got named as correctly as you thought you did, because you ended up with a couple left over pics and you've already used the name on a different pic and... oh well.. if you don't know what it's like... you oughta.....

They looks great! it IS a huge haul!

The only one that I saw with a mistake in the name was St Paul's Glory. Thse are actually 2 different hosta names. St Paul and Paul's Glory. I believe you have St Paul there.

A more shallow watering, particularly during summer, over tree roots isn't necessarily the worst idea. Those tree roots suck up water like nobody's business, so more frequent watering will be required in this case. We're talking twice a week, maybe three times if the weather is blisteringly hot. It's very hard to keep grass in a shady area! If you use synthetic fertilizer, feed normally--it boosts the grass too much and it's easy to put down excessive nitrogen on lawn that doesn't see enough sun to photosynthesize. Most of the benefit from fertilization goes to the trees, which isn't a mistake. Organically, pour it on. This is less to feed the grass than it is to transform the soil to hold more water. And by all means, use the shampoo. Worst case, it can't hurt. Best case, it'll lighten and loosen the soils and hold more water! Reseeding every fall is probably in your future, grasses really don't like heavy shade. Avoid bluegrass as it loathes even light shade, and favor the fescues as they do better and have deeper roots. It's worth looking into grass varieties that tolerate a little more shade (no grass species tolerates full shade). You'll still need to reseed--just less often! Red creeping fescue might be a good choice for you (it's green, not red!) It's pretty shade tolerant, but...well, you'll need to reseed. Perennial ryegrass is a fast sprouter that'll look good for about a year, but will still need reseeding in fall. Fortunately, reseeding is not difficult and the grass develops so quickly that this might be the simplest answer for you. Plus rye is a nice grass, tolerant of drier conditions, and feels nice underfoot. White Dutch clover is shade tolerant and adding some to your mix will give you a greenery cover at grass height that looks good even when the grass doesn't. You may not want clover, however--I sure understand that!

Interesting to hear what the big box stores around the country sell. I suppose it's up to the individual manager's to pick what heuch's they stock? In OKC Lowes started with 2 gallon pots of Peach Crisp and Fire Chief. Although I did find a Georgia Peach marked as a Peach Crisp and snatched it up. They also carried 2 gallon pots with three more common heuchs such as Southern Comfort, Palace Purple and a green one who's name I forget. All 2 gallons were $14.98. Now Lowes has 1 gallon heuchs for $9.98. In the Carnival series, Watermelon, Cocomint and Coffee Bean. They also have Golden Zebra. Home Depot carries one gallon Heuch from one nursery for $6.98 and another for $9.98. This past week the $6.98 Heuchs were one sale with other perrenials for $3.33 each. Different stores had different selections. Picked up Obsidian, Firefly, Carnival Watermelon and Plum Pudding. The Plum Pudding look exactly like the palace Purple I have only taller. Anyone think they are similar or did I get mismarked plants? They are really dark purple and there's no veining.

I've already got some holes made, but it will take me a while to get most of them planted. First I have to look up their future sizes and sun/shade preferences, decide where to put them, and most likely in doing so I will want to swap out others, which will double the time-to-ground. boy .. IT IS SO GREAT TO SEE NEW POSTERS .... welcome i will tell you .... its really hard IDing immature over fertilized previously potted hosta.. BUT THAT NEVER STOPS US....lol its way too green ..unless its your camera .... and its really immature... vein count .. which i presume you are calling rib count.. varies widely in immature plants... its a clue.. but NEVER definitive ... my gut says an ugly great expectations.. paul's glory might not be far off ... frankly ... hosta grow roots at this time of year... best to get it in the ground ASAP ... others will chime in with opinions... i look forward to a picture next year.... it MAY look completely different ... color wise ken

You're right, Alexa! I guess I got carried away with the 'glory's' :-) It is Saint Paul! I also noticed that I automatically typed 'Cheating' instead of 'Cheatin' for Cheatin Heart. Thanks!

Kathy, these are from Karla. She's here on GW, and she does Ebay as well as all the hostas she has on display at her acreage, so I bet you might be able to talk her into shipping to you if you're serious. Email me if you are, and I'll pass your email on to her. I'm hesitant to give out email addresses without permission so that would be the best way. Or, look for klas8405klas on Ebay. Joyce

Hi MA! Of COURSE I remember you! Do you have a pic of your Deep Blue Sea? I'd love to see it. That one is actually a little different for me. Ok, quite a lot different. I do have a few blues, but have stayed away from the more heavily corrugated until now. I'd like to see how it grows up.

Joyce, my Deep Blue Sea is 4 years old, a slow grower and lint catcher, yours looks to be good size already. Love the look of rocks and sedum in your beds. Will you be putting the minis in troughs?

Lint Catcher! Now that's a thought. Now I know spots in my yard that Deep Blue Sea probably better not go. I have a couple of messy trees, one of which is always dropping stuff in my birdbath. Thanks for posting the pic. That dark blue makes an awfully nice mix with the other colors :-)

No, the mini's won't go in a trough. I've already got a mini-bed part way planned. Right now, so many of my minis just aren't displayed to best advantage, so I was already planning a mass move before I brought this batch home.

I have this tree that kind of sits up on a hump. There's nothing around it at the moment, and it's a nuisance to mow around because of the unevenness, with the way the ground slopes down and all. I'm planning a very low cement retaining wall to match the one on the street side of the shade garden in front of my house, all planted with miniature to small size hostas and maybe a few other low growing plants, like the creeping jenny that we had such nice pics of in a post a week or so ago. I hadn't thought of it until just now, but it would make a gorgeous combo with low growing ruby toned sedum like that in my pics above. And maybe even a few small to mid-sized stones... a mix of some dark greyish stones (not sure what kind) and maybe some of that pinkish/purplish granite.

You have just started a thought process that I think is going to transform that new mini-bed into something really special. Thank you :-)

Hopefully, I'll get going on that in the next week or so, and will have pics to share soon!
