Can Japanese Maples shoot new plants??!!

I'm sorry, this post probably sounds quite silly! I don't know anything about these trees except that they are absolutely beautiful. My sister has a very large tree in her yard, and we noticed 20 or 30 tiny plants growing between 100 - 200 feet from the tree. We dug one up, and it came up very easily with digging only about 3-4 inches down. Can they be planted and grown into new trees? Maybe this is a look-a-like Japanese Maple tree? Please let me know as I would LOVE to have some of these in my yard :)

They actually set seed and new plants are formed from the parent tree.Dig'em up and plant them in your yard. Just keep them watered regularly and you'll have your own maples.....

it depends but the seeds may not look the parent tree, have the same colors.

Zone four is too cold for Japanese Maples. Your best option is probably to grow it in a pot and then bring it into a protected environment (like a garage or basement) during the winter months. Japanese Maple roots are killed at 14 degrees F. So I would pot it up in a nice pot with good potting soil and good drainage, water it well, and SLOWLY allow it to be exposed to colder temperatures. Eventually you can let the pot freeze completely, as long as its not exposed to extremely cold temps. Later in April, you can bring it out of "cold storage" and it should do just fine. Then next winter bring it in again to protect it from the extremes of your climate. I know a grower in up-state New York who puts all her JMs in a cold storage warehouse for the winter. The pots freeze solid, but they're protected from harsh weather and extreme temps. In the spring she lets them thaw out and they do beautifully after that. Regards, K4

If this is to be the permanent home for the Osakazuki, I might reconsider that siting. Osakazuki gets to be a big JM - one of the largest growing cultvars - and is really more of a specimen tree than something that could well be overshadowed by a much larger growing nearby red maple. I'd be inclined to give it a space all of its own so it can really shine. Maybe somewhere with a more evergreen backdrop so the gorgeous fall coloring Osakazuki produces will be really be highlighted.

trees are basically full sun ... but.. as along as they get some sun ... most will live ... perhaps they wont be as vigorous as you like.. but they arent going to die.. from reduced sun .. and keep in mind.. there are other variables planting near huge old trees .. like water competition.. etc ... you might want to think about when the ash will have to be removed ... and plan on what you plant.. being replacements ... in tree time.. this would be planning ahead ... you confuse me a bit ... you talk of JMaples .. and then talk about red maples ... to my ear.. and im too lazy to spend time edumacating myself this morning .... you are talking about 2 wildly divergent trees .. to my mind.. warped as it is.. one is a small ornamental foo foo tree {the JM].. and the other is a largish maple [red maples.]... you will get much further along with your analysis if you start using the latin names ... to insure you and everyone else are talking about the same thing .. not only here.. but if you move into discussing such in the trade ... now go plant some trees... link to a good primer below ... ken note proper timing.. and proper watering: https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub

There was a short documentary about acers in this years Chelsea Flower Show coverage and it mentioned how seeds from Acers don't breed true just like noki said. Some varieties are actually grafted onto another root stock remember.

This may not be a bad thing though because from a single tree you can get many different looking seedlings and you may even get a unique one too. I'm looking forward to when one of my JM's sets seed because of this.

Keep them in mostly shade, potted if possible, moist soil, with a good ball of original soil mixed with a good humus, until the begining of the fall. Then plant them in a desired location. This is what worked for me the best when I did this. If there is an abundance get more than you need whatever dosn't survive you can always sell, trade or give away.

If you don't have a spouse who shoots new plants, then you are OK. Japanese maple seedlings are frequent in irrigated gardens out here, back there it probably doesn't event take watering to get them popping up in quantity.
