Sango Kaku winter damage

I have a Sango Kaku JM that I planted last spring that appears to have some widespread branch tip die back this year. Any suggestions on what I should do? Should I give it more time to leaf out, or prune the dead tips? Do I prune back to the live wood or back to the closest bud that leafed out? Also, it looks like there is some bark split at the base (see first picture). Should I be concerned about this tree surviving? I've grown quite fond of it over last year and this winter and would hate to see it die. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As best as I can tell from the pics, looks rather more like pseudomonas (bacterial blight) than typical winter cold damage. This cultivar of JM is extremely prone to this pathogen. It is often associated with aborted buds, tip dieback and eventually blackened stems or bark and is very common in wet springs.

You do want to prune out the affected portions, cutting back below any infected growth to viable wood, generally several inches beyond what looks like healthy growth, but always to a growth point or node. Don't leave stubs! And sterilize your pruners between cuts to avoid spreading the problem.

If persistant, the problem can prove fatal but if caught early, there is a good chance of recovery. You might want to research Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae as it applies to Japanese maples for other methods of control.

That would be my first thought also, without even looking at the pictures - based on what I see in my area.

Agree with butterfly... that grass is taking up a lot of the space for roots for your maple. I would also not trim anything until after new growth comes out and hardens, maybe end of June next year, but definitely repot, and go to the maples (and Bonsai) forums and read up on granular soil mixes. Dirt is not a good medium to grow trees for any length of time (in a pot). You have the right exposure for the tree to do well. There are methods of watering for when you're away for a bit. Also, read up on root pruning when you transplant. It is a big deal for trees that will live entirely in a pot.

thank you Houston Texas, I think you're right. The 2nd post picture is the REAL Sango kaku based upon all my research and the 1st photo is not. I checked all the attributes of the 'Shindeshojo' and found that it is not in line with this JM. The Imposter Tree has a bright red bark, Spring and Summer shows Green leaves while fall is bright red leaves with bright red twigs. The Shindeshojo's leaves are red in spring. Although both have leaves of 5 lobes.Any other suggestions? -M Here is a link that might be useful:

thanks. the problem is that there is one tall center limb going straight up, with two side branches (of almost the same length at the bottom) going out, so I am thinking of cutting the center limb by half and the side limbs by half. Would that work? (I can't seem to post a picture).

I also have a Sango Kaku planted in a NW exposure. The tree has the dieback you described for 2 years now and because of the dieback the tree is still the same 4 feet tall as when we purchased it. I plan to move the tree to a SE location protected by the house and several douglas firs. A green dissectum and a Bloodgood japanese maple in the same NW exposure do not suffer the dieback but a A. buergerianum and unknown shrubby A. palmatum exhibit the dieback. James G. Harris' book says: "While not strictly a disease, leaf scorch and twig burn is a frequent problem. Twig burn can be caused by exposure to salt-laden winds, late spring frosts or exposure to hot sun. Leaf scorch can also occur if plants are watered on a hot sunny day, or as the result of irregular irrigation." further "Once damage occurs it is not treatable, so it is best to avoid it by protecting the trees from strong winds and frosts..." "Young maples are particularly vunerable to dieback. This is probably caused by the plant growing on late into the autumn so that the new wood does not harden before the onset of winter. The only treatment is to prune out any dead wood in the spring." If the tree is wilting or withering you may be giving it too much fertilizer.

Ouch that's bad news. Thanks for the diagnosis. I tried to read up on Pseudomonas syringae. It seems as though, as you've suggested, the most important thing to to pick a dry day and prune back as much of the black/dead wood as possible. I'll do that later today. I've also read that it can help to spray with a bordeaux mixture in the fall and early spring. From what I understand its too late to spray now since the maple is already leafed out so there is too much risk of a phytotoxic reaction.

Do you have any thoughts as to whether it'd be beneficial/safe to spray the foliage and trunk now with a light application of something systemic like phyton 27 that isn't supposed to leave a residue on the foliage? Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks again for the help. I'm including a few more pictures. After closer inspection, what I'd refer to as the central leader appears to have some fairly large blackened areas on the upper 1/5th of the tree. Just to be clear, before I prune out this sizeable branch, can please confirm that removing this area now is my best option for the long term health of the tree?
