Air layering grafted dwarf A.P cultivars with overlong rootstock.

I recently received a shipment of 1 year grafted dwarf cultivars intended to be used as container plants. The problem is that some of the graft unions are between 6-8" up on the rootstock. Having dwarf stems and foliage on an 8" standard isn't quite what I had in mind; I wanted natural looking dwarf trees in pots. I'm considering air layering the trees in a year or two when they are stronger. Anyone ever try this before? Any thoughts?. I have successfully air layered the species in the past. Thanks,

Dave
