Cool! I have a good friend in Owatonna! My daughter and her daughter often have playdates!

But why do you say you're zone 3/4? Owatonna is 4a, almost 4b!... according to this map on the U's extension website: http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden/MG/USDAZonemap.html

Anywho, any good hosta nurseries down that way for when we come your direction? Those icky pics I posted were from my friend's family farm in Owatonna, so I think I'd prefer to buy rather than dig, when I'm there! LOL

Millissa, I say Z3/4 because I like to make REALLY sure that when I plant something, it's going to survive the winters. For example, I have a dozen+ roses, all chosen specifically so I don't have to do anything to protect them - mainly Z3, a couple of Z2 and only a couple of Z4 hardy. Hostas don't mind the cold but other things I've planted did :-(

I like Turtle Creek Nursery here in Owatonna, for Hostas and other perennials. They have over a hundred varieties of Hostas and their plants are beautiful. They are very nice people to talk with and the mother of one of the partners used to work at Shady Oaks in Wasecam, back when they did retail and not just wholesale, so they have some 'hosta knowledge' on staff.

Debbie I grew up n Royalton. Arcy, I'm also from the Hutchinson area, just a few miles SW.

je148, I too say we are zn 3/4. I have had "zone 4" plants not make it and it is a bummer! Also I worked for a local green house for a few years. The owner INSISTED we are solid zn 3! Something about taking into consideration mountain ranges,vallys etc. He would not sell, as a perennial, anything not hardy to zn 3. Against his advice I bought an Autumn Fern, he was right. It did not make it through the second winter!
Owatana is farther south then I am. I would have felt more confident you are zn 4, however. It is all very interesting.

We are happy valley this morning as I finally got the Hostas that were purchased from Klas8405 on Saturday planted last night. They are all looking great.

jel48 ... hey, that's the nursery that's right by my friend's house! You turn off on the road across from the nursery to get to her house. Sa-weet. I am SOOOOO there next time I go to her place!

I even kidded with her last time we were there. My comment was something like, "OMG, are you at that nursery all the time? She said, "we just have my husband's check deposited right into their account!"

For those of you Minnesotans that did not make Karla's sale this year. As evidenced by the photos she sells some incredibly fab plants. Try to make it next spring. If you are not on her email list - email me from my home page and I will have her add you!

I missed the sale last weekend, but Karla was nice enough to let me head up there last night and I walked away with 12 new beauties! She had so many to select from - the hard part was choosing - and apparently the selection is much greater in early May... I can't wait to go next year!! Thanks for sharing her info Teresa!

FANTASTIC!!! There are a bunch of us! And a hidy ho to the Apple Valley hostaholics! That's where I planted my first hosta and was in love immediately! A big row of 30 Royal Standard!

Melissa, let me know next time you're going to be around if you think you and your friend might have any time to spare. I'd love to have you stop by for a walk around my garden. It would be great to meet another hostafriend from GW :-) And I know what your friend means about Turtle Creek... I bet those guys have at least one full paycheck of mine this year!

Hi, newbie here to MN (for a year now) and Hostas. We inherited at least 100 hosta's when we bought our new home. They are so fantastic. Now I just need to post some pics and have you guys help me ID them.

I almost missed this post.....I'm up in north central Minnesota, about two hours from St. Cloud. I was down in the metro area this past weekend, and we did the Bachman run. Also checked out a nursery just a couple of blocks from there, as someone here advised me last year.
