Japanese Maple Photos

I thought I would share some pix of my maples, most of which were obtained this year. It was a little cloudy when I took these shots, I'm afraid. What I'm most excited about is the HUGE deal I got from a nursery that had some damaged plants. They were certifiably doomed, had I not stepped in. Got four 15 gallon maples for $50. For all of them! Retail was nearly $200 for each one, and I believe one of them was like $249,00. So far, they're all doing well!

I'm starting to get into this now - perhaps the bug has bitten?

I'm happy for you!

I think you have some extra letters in some of the cultivar names or a miss-spelling on two but I'm not a bookworm with these. 'Viridis' looks right to me and the one that starts with an "H" is spelled differently twice.

Wow, I am a bit envious. I thought I got a good deal. I picked up two 15 gallons that said "needs TLC" for 20 bucks each. One was a 50" Inabe Shidare and a Tamukeyama that has about a 1 1/2 - 2 inch diameter trunk. I had to repot, prune and give them some minerals but they seem to be perking up. Congrats on the deal, I would have jumped on those in a second. They look great.

First question: what was the type listed on the label? Second question: Do see a graft union anywhere? With some 800-1000 registered cultivars of Japanese maples specific identification can be very complicated unless there are some very unique identifying characteristics. In the absence of any graft, this could very well be just a seedling JM, aka a straight Acer palmatum. They can still be quite variable as to leaf shape, lobing, amount of dissection or coloring. And make lovely trees despite not having a cultivar name.

Japanese Red Maple or Red Select Japanese Maple?

Hmmm...where to start. First of all, there are nearly a thousand different cultivars of Japanese maples. About a third (or maybe more) of them have red leaves at least a portion of the year. Secondly, japanese red maple would be a misleading name since a red maple is a native maple to the US that has green leaves and red flowers. Red japanese maple would make more sense. So, "Japanese red maple" could refer to one of hundreds of cultivars that have been reproduced by grafting, or it could be a red seedling that shows good red characteristics. This would mean that 'red select' is a specific cultivar of a red japanese maple. You must also consider whether or not it is a weeping red dissectum (fine lacy leaves) or an upright palmatum (star shaped leaves). 'Red select' is one of many red dissectum cultivars (lacy and weeping). I think 'red select' is a seedling from 'inaba shidare' (guys I know Vertrees claims that they are one in the same, but I have convincing information that says otherwise). They are similar, but some claim there are distinct differences (and by distinct I mean practically with a magnifying glass). Other similar common cultivars include 'crimson queen', 'tamukeyama', 'garnet', and the newer 'red dragon'. A couple of good red upright cultivars include 'bloodgood' and 'fireglow'. Search these names and this should shed some light on what the differences are.

A lot of young JM's will have reddish stems, especially on newer growth. Not a lot to go on but the straight species, Acer palmatum, will often produce growth in young trees that looks very similar to your photo. And because they are not named cultivars, they are often sold at significantly lower prices than named forms. As an aside, your tree looks to be planted rather close to the house -- too close I'd guess. Even quite dwarf forms of JM's will produce a relatively wide canopy in time. Unless it is a very vase-shaped selection, you should allow about 10' away from any structure for proper clearance and air circulation.

Hi Laura, Maples in general have delicate leaves that can burn with the summer heat, drying winds, over fertilization, over or underwatering, and salt buildup in the soil. Sometimes even when you do everything properly you will still get leaf burn. Usually though the second flush of leaves are much hardier. Such is the case with my red seedling. The leaves seem tougher this year than I remember last year. It's certainly getting more sun in its new location than last year and it hasn't burned yet. The maples with dissected leaves with the long, thin lobes and double serrations tend to be more delicate than the amoenum and palmatum types and burn more easily. In your case it seems like a combination of summer heat and underwatering. What were the temps like when you first planted a month ago? And what are the temps now? This will give you a good gauge as to watering frequency. I use local temps to *generally* gauge how often I need to water my potted maples. For instance, in the winter when temps are in the low 60s once every seven days is sufficient. Upper 60s I may step it up to every 5-6 days, lower 70s every 4-6 days, upper 70s every 3-4 days, lower 80s every 2-3 days, upper 80s to lower 90s every other day. When the temps at my new place reach the upper 90s and lower 100s I may need to water every day or perhaps even twice a day on some of the potted maples. I would say since it is getting hotter best to stick with twice a week waterings unless the soil is too wet. You're right in that the tree needs less water as there are no leaves to transpire moisture. But remember that even though the tree has no leaves it still has roots that need to stay sufficiently moist and still supply nutrients to the branches and buds. Don't fertilize at this point. I'd recommend applying kelp extract as a soil soak according to the package label directions till fall sets in in your area. Don't worry if the tree doesn't put out new leaves for the remainder of the year. As long as the branches and buds are okay. Then, next spring when the temps starts to rise after the last frost and before bud break start applying a low nitrogen fertilizer with numbers like 1-5-5 along with the kelp extract according to the directions for a soil soak. Nice trees. The one you were uncertain about is not Garnet -- which is a dissectum with an orange-red color in spring. There are many varieties of red-leaved JMs that it could be.

I've got many of the same varieties that you got from World Plants. Autumn Moon is spectacular with colors like nothing else. Koto no ito looks like a miniature weeping willow. Beni ubi gohan has very bright red leaves in spring and a nice compact form.

Thanks everyone. Dax, I corrected the spelling on 'Hogyoku'. I just used the spelling that was on the tree tags, so no telling how accurate any of them are.

Matt - thanks also for your words. Don't be jealous - its all just luck being in the right place at the right time.

Dawgie - I'm getting ready for another World Plants order! I love these little grafts - they're inexpensive, and something about them is - well, I don't know! They're like like a little puppy or something! Little baby trees that need TLC and a bigger pot to grow in. The big trees are wonderful, of course, but these are more like children. :-)

That's funny, I also call my new grafts my "puppy trees." I grow mine in pots until they get too large for my deck or patio, and then plant them in the yard. Just set out my Shindeshogo, Koto no it, and Seiryu this spring.

Some of them I would like to keep in pots indefinitely because they look so nice up close -- Kamagata, Mikawa yatsubusa and Beni ubi gohan. Plus, I'm running out of places to put more trees in my yard.

You'll love Shindeshojo. It's one of my favorites because it continually changes in appearance.

I'm also waiting on an order from Worldplants:

I debated ordering a Katsura or Orange Dream, but not sure if I have a place in my yard for either of them.

I almost got Beni hosi and Hanama nishiki too! But I had to pare it down to something sane, as I had about 15 in the shopping cart! So those two got taken out of the cart. Gotta save some for next year, anyway! :-)
