Don't read this if you're sick of winter

I think I might be the only one in this forum who likes snow!

I used a stepladder to put Christmas lights up on my lilac tree, but I hate ladders so I waited to take the lights down, hoping the snow would get high enough so I could just walk around it on snowshoes, and yesterday I was finally able to. Also for the past few years I have been putting geegaws up on the side of one shed that's in a kind of private garden that only I can see. I can't put a ladder there because the banking is steep and a little mushy, plus I have daylilies there. So yesterday I was able to snowshoe in and put up a few things I had been saving for high spots. I'm 4'-11", so it's fun to be able to reach stuff!

hey Doll,I moved to Maine because I love snow. I love painting it, walkiing in it, driving in it, I love snow!

I like 4 full seasons mostly.

I've been enjoying the snowshoeing, too. First time in a couple of years there's been enough snow to dig the shoes out!

Doll, I don't like ladders either!

When you look into the facts of dishwashers, a lot of people have quit using them. Of course there's a place for them, and PROPERLY USED they can be a valuable tool. But therein lies the problem. So many people think they can put them in there, then try to save money by turning down their electric water heaters to the point that Legionella can grow. Then they use that underheated and bacteria-infested water in their dishwasher to splash day-week old food around, not totally unlike a petri dish, and then disable the dryer to save money on the economy cycle and sit in there until the next use. Now anyone who has even basic grade school science background may remember that bacteria grows well in warm, moist surroundings. Hmm. Where would that be? There's a lot of differing opinions out there. I've read many of the arguments on both sides of this and have formed my own opinions. Hand washing properly can be better than machined improperly and vice-versa. But to say you won't get sick using a dishwasher isn't using much common sense but I certainly understand the sales pitch. I haven't had a (mechanical) dishwasher in over 25 years. The doctor visits I've had were primarily for broken bones and other things that certainly were not caused by handwashing dishes. If you like dishwashers, good for you and enjoy using them. Just don't get caught up with all the misinformation that is available on the internet. The internet, like the dishwasher, PROPERLY USED, can be a valuable tool, but there's so much misinformation out there, plus outright lies that believing everything can cause you a lot of trouble. Sounds totally normal to me! By the way, my mom still has Rinnie's collar and dog tags. Rinnie was her dog as a child and Mom is in her mid-60's. One time I asked her what we were supposed to do with such things when she died. She said that she didn't care but she was keeping them until then, lol. When I got back to my Granny's house after my Granddaddy's funeral, I immediately changed into overalls- his daily wear when he could get away with it (complete with bare feet, lol) and went out to pick the okra he had planted in the front yard. When Granny arrived she was "slightly mortified" but I knew Granddaddy would have had a fit that "the boys (his sons)" had not picked the okra yet. I am not much on decorum, lol.

For three days now, I have been seeing a rather large spider crawling across the top shelf of my computer desk. I haven't tried to catch it to put it outside, because grabbing among all the stuff on the shelf would result in a disaster. It must be difficult to go through life fearful of bugs, spiders, snakes, etc. I don't have that fear, in fact for the most part I find them fascinating, and in the case of spiders, when practical, adopt a live and let live attitude. My mother was the same, as is my sister and my children. But in my husbands family, they all are more fearful. So I am wondering if a persons feelings about such things are inherited or perhaps learned.

Do Winter Squash stop flowering if you don't harvest the mature squash

I posted this question years ago without any decisive answers so I thought I would try again. I have been growing winter squash for many years. In past years I would wait until the stem on the squash starts to brown, then wait another week or so before harvesting it. They taste just fine and last in storage for many months, if not a year, but sometimes I read about others saying to leave the squash on the vine until the fall. My problem with this is that I think this will inhibit the vine from further flowering. This year I was going to just leave all the squash hanging on the vines until fall but in the last couple of weeks every vine has stopped flowering. At this point there is still time in my area for new squash to mature so I'm thinking I will just harvest all of them and see if I can get them to flower again but was wondering what others have experienced. My feeling is that if you leave them hanging all summer you're only going to get 1 or 2 squash per vine (which is what I have now) but if you cut them once they're mature, you're more likely to get 3-4 squash per vine. My experience is also that after one squash is growing on a particular vine, a second pollinated flower on that vine is less likely but still may develop to maturity. But if there are two squash growing on one vine, it's very unlikely that a 3rd one will develop and mature.

I'm sick of it and am ready for my greenhouse to start warming up so I can start some seeds out there. I know it will be a long time before I can even think about tomatoes, etc., but I want to try some cool-season annuals and perennials such as poppies and delphiniums.

I just got back from 6 days in Fla. and it wasn't enough. I was fortunate to be there while the last storm was happening here. Not fun to come home to 2' of snow when it had mostly melted before I had left.

veilchen, I am leaving for Arizonia on Thurday for 3 weeks...I would rather stay here in Maine, mostly the fear of flying, but it should be good to go.

I hear your attitude, though. :)

Can you attach a green house to some sunny windows and open them up? Just a thought, never did it before but desparate measures cause for desparate thinking when it comes to getting happy and sowing.

Me too. I love winter but I've had enough snowmobiling, ice fishing and sliding. I want to work in the soil and get a tan and complain about how hot it is. I'd even welcome a blackfly (just one!) today. It's 21Â°, the wind is howling and it's snowing again. No school today.

All I can see of my mailbox is the top of its post, when I look out my study window. I had to dig and dig to get it visible from up and down the road, so it won't (I hope) get hit, when the town plow came along after the guy I hire had come and gone. Had to force my way through a drift to get out of the house this morning, and then dried my socks on the office radiator (no one else was in to speak of - bare feet in shoes didn't matter). Shoveled for an hour after work tonight, just doing the "cleanup" of what the plow guy can't get at. Am I ready for spring? You bet I am! UNCLE! UNCLE!

My petunias are coming up in their flat. Thank goodness.

Iam back from Arizona! Last night we flew in after spending 3 weeks in southern Arizona. The temps were in the 80's when we left and clear skies.

Believe it or not, it was good to be home and I actually enjoyed seeing the snow and am glad that my gardens are still dormant. Now I am able to finally start some sowings!

The seeds are flying at my house!
