japanese red maple has golden-yellow moss/fungus - help

I have a 3 year old RED japanese maple that has patches of golden-yellow moss appearing after a long, cold, snowy and wet winter. I'm not sure that this is weather related and can't find any answers surfing the web. I can't rub the moss off - it appears to be attached to the bark. The tree otherwise looks normal and is budding out as normal.

Can anyone out there tell me what this is and what to do for it?
